Here's some young folk and a not-so-young folk talking to NTV about Young Folk at the Hall (coming up Jan 25 and Feb 1 and 2 at The Lantern in St. John's). A great place for your kids or students to find mentoring, friendship, and community. And THAT's a big part of what Folk is all about, isn't it? From the registration package:

At the initial workshop/meeting musicians will be divided into groups of five or six musicians with a broad range of ages and musical ability within their group. Each group will then work for the afternoon with a facilitator who will help guide the group through the selection of common repertoire (4 pieces maximum - songs and/or instrumentals), and the arrangement of those pieces. Plus, a band name will be decided on and band photos taken!

The second session is quite similar to the first only more focused on rehearsing and arranging the final repertoire in advance of the finale concert the following day.
