30 years ago, some creative and thoughtful individuals created the Festival of Lights in Summerland, BC. The goal was to let people know Summerland was a great place to live & visit and to give residents & visitors a fantastic experience anticipating Christmas. Jim is a local Summerland musician who has played at several local pubs, Legions and the like. Coming out to see Jim play will have you tapping your toes, dancing and singing along to many popular songs as Jim is very well-known for not just performing for an audience, but fully engaging the crowd through song.

Vincent de Cowans: Fluently tri-lingual (French//Spanish/ English) with several influences in his music, Vincent is among the most popular Singer/Guitarist/Songwriters in south Okanagan, regularly playing concerts & club venues along the valley. He also hosts Open Mike Jam’s at Osoyoos branch of the Canadian Legion.
Dave Botkin: Long active with Classic Rock & Blues bands in Calgary, Dave took several workshops and semesters at Mount Royal University Conservatory with Professor Gary De Boek, he then became Vocalist/Bassist with two local ballroom dance bands prior to moving to Summerland two years ago. He co-leads bi-weekly Open Mike Jam Sessions at Summerland branch of the Canadian Legion.

Shaughnessy Barker is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, originally from Vernon, B.C., but now calling Summerland home. The Kettle Valley Steam Railway showcases a unique part of the Okanagan’s and British Columbia’s history. Built during 1910-1915, the KVR “Kootenay to Coast Connection” powered our pioneer fruit industry into world markets, transported our families on vacations and errands; created employment, hobos and stories that will be with us forever.
KVSR invites you to join them on the only preserved section of this historic railway: Ten miles of beautiful vistas; from lush orchards and vineyards to a spectacular view of lake and land from the Trout Creek Bridge 238 ft above the canyon floor. The sight and sound of our restored 1912 Steam Locomotive the “3716” will bring the era alive as you ride along on this 90 minute journey in a vintage passenger coach or open air car.

Light up the Arts starts on Friday, November 24th and runs until Saturday, December 23rd! You'll find beautiful, handmade items from our creative arts community, perfect for your Christmas gift-giving. Candles, pottery, knit and crochet wear, paintings, jewelry, books. leather bags and belts and more!
We'll be holding a daily draw for a handmade Christmas ornament of your choice and you can enter our raffle for eleven different and fabulous prizes!

“The Festival of Lights was conceived 32 years ago by 4 Summerland Businessmen, Jerry Hallquist, Art Sewell, Allan Fabbi and Bruce Hallquist under the umbrella of the Downtown Business Improvement Area of the day. It was originally started to help showcase the businesses of downtown Summerland and it certainly has over the years.
To get the event started, the committee sold strings of Christmas lights to every merchant/building owners in the downtown area, to decorate their buildings and approximately 25,000 lights were sold that first year. The District of Summerland became involved and decorated the light standards on the streets and other public buildings in the downtown area.
At the time, it was the only festival of its kind in the Okanagan and has been well attended every year! Out of all the festivals that were done over the early years in downtown, no one had any idea that the Summerland Festival pf Lights would be the only one to survive 32 years later. Festival of Lights was an instant success with an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people in attendance for the first event. It continues to thrive today and is not only a premier holiday event for Summerland, but for the whole Okanagan.”
