Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and we’d like to share a poem written by John Forget AKA Lady Fantasia LaPremiere.

“I wrote this poem after a Pride Parade a few years back. I decided to dress all in red to commemorate the MMIW movement,” Forget said. “A local photographer took my photo and when I saw it, the poem was inspired.”

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the children who never returned home and the Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.

It’s important to know that today is not the only day that we give this honour. Active education and commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Today is also recognized as Orange Shirt Day — a movement created by Phyllis Webstad.

Beyond wearing an orange shirt and promoting “Every Child Matters,” what further actions can we take to engage more meaningfully in reconciliation?

🧡 Learn history through an Indigenous lens. Educate yourself using resources online and locally
🧡 Understand why you and others are wearing orange shirts
🧡 Support Indigenous businesses, events, and artists

Please share this post and let this be an accessible small resource for all 🧡
