Tattoo artists don’t go to school—we go to seminars. Tattooing is always evolving, and so is tattoo education. Where word-of-mouth once ruled, we now have endless online content that can either empower or confuse. And with tools available everywhere (even Amazon), it’s harder than ever to know what’s legit. That’s why we created the Best Practices Seminar at Tatu Amor—a safe, inclusive space for tattoo artists at all skill levels. Self-care and personal development come in vast forms; It doesn’t always have to be a grand act but… Some times, it’s flying out to a witchy “business” conference in the mountains where you gather with a bunch of sparkly betches and meditate, collaborate, & co-create with ;) Gathering with a community of like-minded wxmen, to have the feeling of being connected to your people, and to get to ground into your knowing without a shadow of doubt left in sight is f**king magic✨ I am so grateful that I got to go to the As She Rises 2023 Calgary Conference hosted by @iamkcvolard 💖 I had so many meaningful moments;, prolific AHA moments, insightful conversations, heard incredible talks, healing modalities, and, getting to watch one of my dear friends and coaches, Kiki @wildlywealthwoman revel in her beautiful effin glory, what a force. Damn, I’m feelin kinda lucky ;) Also yes, I drank the koolaid long time ago lol (or maybe it was that microdose 😜)... But really, there’s just something about being on an exploration of life, a pursuit of leveling up (inwards) and just feeling f**king good along the way (despite any speed bumps) that makes the magic happen ✨ Thank you to everyone from this last weekend. Hey listen, if you can find that perfect match in a mentor and apprentice situation then there is nothing more than I would hope for. What we offer here is not meant to replace a healthy and mutually beneficial apprenticeship (whether that’s a paid one or loyalty-based or both, there are many kinds of apprenticeships, which we’ll talk about later).. What we want to emphasize is the fundamental knowledge that not every tattoo artist is privileged enough to learn, all in one place, vetted by many trusted sources and researched for validity. Everyone has a right to a thorough education and to have the opportunity to be equipped with knowledge to be safe and responsible. Also no one should have to work to earn the secrets to being a good tattoo artist when it comes to general best practices, client care and mindset. While we are most definitely not a tattoo school, we do believe in higher tattoo education and creating resources and strengthening community. Did you know? Tax season was officially over for businesses on June 15 in Canada. . YOU are your own business as a tattoo artist whether you work for yourself or a shop (usually) . Tattoo artists are generally classified as independent contractors/self-employed who "contract" work for commission to a business. . Also we’re often registered as Sole Proprietorships or sometimes as corporations. . And as a business you can write off your supplies, equipment, and even education! . So, don't be afraid to get a good machine, buy books, online courses and training. . It's safe to invest in yourself as a student because when you're dedicated, and you cover all aspects of becoming a tattoo artist, a holistic approach, you are guaranteed to make your money back in your tattoos, and now you know, in tax refunds! 🎉 . . *As always, please talk to a licensed tax advisor for specific advice and to help you maximize your returns. It doesn't matter where you started from, every tattoo artist has their own journey. Mine started in 2012 and didn't look very linear like you'd hope for when trying to learn a new skill and start a career. I tattooed whenever and wherever and on whomever I could (some hard NOs in there too ha) and then gave up a bunch in between started all over again. It was really hard to find good mentors (without giving full-time free work for years). There were no trustworthy schools, no online classes, and it took a lot of initiative and, time unfortunately to get to where I am now 🎨✌️ With the support of the community and my friends though I made it through these years of trial and error. With the kindness of blank canvases and tips and tricks, it all helped me to be able to tattoo under any circumstance in any location, safely. I'm proud to say I'm now able to give back to my community and industry by helping other artists' journeys with what I teach 🙂 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about your own tattoo journey and how I can either help you or, direct you somewhere that can get you closer to where you wanna go.
