As we dive into 2025, here’s a reflection from food writer Craig Claiborne to inspire us: “Cooking is at once child’s play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love.”
This reminds us of the marvel of cooking: it can be imaginative, like a child’s exploration, and deeply fulfilling at the same time. At RFRK, sentiments like this fuel our mission every day. Happy Thai Pongal 🌞🌾✨Sinthu’s Thai Pongal, written by Sivahami and Sriranjani Vijenthira and illustrated by V. Jeevananthan, is a bilingual (English and Tamil) story about a young girl from Toronto who visits her grandparents in Jaffna, Sri Lanka to experience this majestic, multi-day event.

Pongal is observed by Tamils worldwide, and in 2025, is celebrated between January 14th and 17th. It marks the end of the winter solstice and honours the sun, with families giving thanks for the season’s first harvest. This story focuses on Sinthu preparing the ceremonial Pongal dish made with rice from the first harvest, and other ingredients like sugarcane & jaggery, with her loving extended family.

In addition to a fantastic kids book to further their food literacy, our partners also received these Mushroom Grow Kits from Nature, a small-scale Ontario mushroom farm 🍄.
