On June 13th 1935, James Braddock won the Heavyweight Championship in what is considered one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, and earned himself the nickname ‘Cinderella Man’.

In 2005, Russel Crowe would star as Braddock in the 3 time Academy Award nominated film aptly titled after his nickname.

The majority of the depression era film was shot in Toronto, mostly Distillery District and Liberty Village, however the boxing gym he trains at in the film is none other than the Eastminster United Church Gymnasium (as pictured in the second slide).

Will we have our own Cinderella man or Cinderella on April 13th?

Only time will tell.

The Danforth is home to many beautiful churches, mosques and places of worship for people of all faiths.

Eastminster United is no exception to this. Completed in 1914, it has welcomed people of all faiths over it’s 105 year history for worship, social, cultural and recreational events.

It’s beautiful Norman Gothic encloses a 1200 seat sanctuary and worship hall, a theatre, a bowling alley, and our event space, a gorgeous brown brick, tiered gymnasium.

This gymnasium has been host to many events as well as multiple Hollywood film shoots (more to come on that tomorrow) and will be home to our event on the 13th of April.

In July 2018, The Danforth / Greektown community came together and showed their strength and resolve after a terrible tragedy. The outpouring of love and compassion that emerged in the neighbourhood and from across the city was incredible.

We couldn’t be more proud to bring our second Fight Night TO event to a community that is a model of what a great Toronto neighbourhood is. Inclusive, diverse, colourful and supportive. Proud of it’s roots and history but accepting of all.

Come celebrate with us on the 13th of April with local food, drink and artists coupled with a tantalizing night of amateur boxing action!
