In order for us to engage in the process of reconciliation, we must educate ourselves on the painful past brought onto Indigenous Peoples and Communities as a direct result of the actions of colonialism in this country.

We must also understand this is still a current issue.

As we recognize the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and Communities across the country, and recognize the immense amount of work that needs to be done in order to reconcile the painful history and ongoing impacts of our country’s wrong doings.

We have a responsibility to do better, and learn from our actions. We encourage you to read about the steps that can be taken in learning about Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, and check out other resources, and areas where you can help.

The event industry got hit hard at the onset of COVID-19 being declared a pandemic 😷
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Everything has been flipped upside down, the world is in a state of emergency and physical distancing orders are still at play.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We wait daily with bated breath for clear direction and information from Toronto Public Health on how to help flatten the curve.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yet, it is still unclear when the industry will begin booking events freely again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Back in May, we asked our mailing list where they thought the industry was heading in the foreseeable future (in this survey). 10 questions and 91 responses exposed—67% of event organizers suspended operations and 58% said they would continue future business planning.

There are a million Canadians who work in this industry, most of whom cannot return to work yet.⁣

In a shared effort to increase awareness for displaced event workers due to the pandemic, major arts organizations across Canada will be participating in a day of visibility Today, September 22nd. ⁣
⁣
Event venues across Canada will be lit with red lights to create a visual display of the reach and impact of events workers.⁣
⁣
Artscape will be participating in the following spaces:⁣
⁣
🔴 (Covered Street Barn / Barn 2)⁣
🔴 (Lobby)⁣
🔴 (Lobby)⁣
🔴 (Artscape Lounge)⁣
⁣
The lighting fixtures will be shining red overnight, starting between 5 pm and 6:15 pm on Tuesday, September 22nd. The lights will be turned off no later than 12 pm on Wednesday, September 23rd.⁣

✨We also invite any tenants and supporters to shine a red light in street-visible windows of their homes, studios and/or live/work studios. ⁣
