I caught The Last Waltz live in concert for the first time at Woodbine park during the Beaches International Jazz Festival and they were fabulous.
Their musical celebration to Canada's legendary rock group The Band last performance was nothing short of superb. Many of my good older friends would remember these hits of the day: The Night They Drove Dixie Down, Up on Cripple Creek and The weight which I still refer to as Take a Load off Annie.

After every Selena Evangeline performance, more and more people are asking the question: Who is this artist and where is she from? To satisfy the curiosity of those interested in finding out, here is an excerpt from an interview with Selena done recently with Bill King that answers these questions.

“I was born in Vancouver, B.C. but only lived there on and off for maybe 4 or 5 years. Other than that, I've been a Toronto girl for most of my life.
“My first instrument was definitely voice. I started singing before I could speak (it all began with my singing Barry White and Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch"). Outside of singing; technically - my first instrument was recorder in grade 4 (jammin' out "Hot Cross Buns") - which led me to taking up clarinet in grade seven which turned into sax in high school (Etobicoke School of the Arts) where I learned more about theory and writing music.
“Whitney Houston was a big influence for me vocally. Later on, I really developed an appreciation for Prince, Oleta Adams, Kim Burrell, Bonnie Raitt, Sting...the list keeps growing. I know that they're all very different stylistically but what they all have in common and what inspires me most is that they are the "whole package" unto themselves - writers, musicians and performers.” - Selena Evangeline.

Toronto's Empress of Soul and R&B, Selena Evangeline & her band includes Selena Evangeline - Guitar & Vocals, Joe Palawan - Keyboards & Vocals; Dane E Wedderburn - Bass & Vocals and Shamakah Ali - Drums & Vocals. The band will appear at The Avenue on November 22 which is also the first anniversary of
of Parasol Entertainment.

Selena Evangeline Wows Audience at The Avenue

Recently back from a one month hiatus in the UK., Toronto's R&B songstress Selena Evangeline wasted no time in getting back to the business she loves best - pleasing her audiences with her unique, clear, soulful and melodic voice.

This was evident on Sunday Oct 18, at her Back by Popular Demand show at The Avenue Restaurant & Lounge. The audience cheered her on song after song, from Sade's Sweetest Taboo to Marvin Gaye's What's going On to TLC's Waterfall, they loved every bit of it and in the end...cried out for more! Selena, visibly moved by all the love, gave an encore of Gladys Knight's version of Midnight Train to Georgia.

Unfortunately for her Toronto fans, she has revealed to Parasol Entertainment, promoters of the show, that she will be leaving this city by year's end to take up permanent residence in the UK. Although Selena will be greatly missed, both Parasol and the management and staff of The Avenue conveyed their best wishes and made a decision to schedule a Christmas/Farewell party for Selena for November 22 at The Avenue Restaurant & Lounge

Jeremy Ledbetter and his Caribbean jazz fusion group CaneFire, delivered a crowd pleasing two and a half hours show of mainly original music on the rooftop patio at Tropical Nights Restaurant last Sunday evening. And, the enthusiastic crowd of over 200 attendees loved every minute of it.

The group performed most of the songs from their latest CD Pandemonium much to the delight of the cheering audience. One major high point came when the band played the popular David Rudder's composition Trini to de Bone.

Here is a video excerpt of the group performing what some consider to be Trinidad & Tobago's second national anthem 'Trini to de Bone.' Enjoy!
