We are hosting our final, free outdoor Twilight Concert in the Park this coming Wednesday, August 2nd. Though the concert officially begins at 7pm, kicked off with a live singing of the national anthem, many people arrive well before the start time to get a good place to set their lawn chair or lay out their picnic blanket and listen to the band warm up with pieces that are just about as good as the main performance! For this final concert, the Toronto All-Star Big Band will be performing, and we are so excited! Join us for a lovely evening of music, warm summer weather, and fun. Bring a lawn chair, bring a blanket, bring a friend (or meet new ones there!) and let's gather together as a community - it promises to be a fantastic event!

Looking forward to our upcoming Twilight Concert in the Park on Wednesday, July 5th! The Etobicoke Community Concert Band will be playing again, and they are absolutely fantastic - everyone had such a good time at the last concert in June! Though the concert officially starts at 7pm, come early to get a seat, listen to them warm-up (though their warm-ups don't really sound like warm-ups - they are just great musicians and every song is lovely!), and meet some of your neighbours. Or bring friends to enjoy the evening with - whatever you do, be sure you don't miss it! For more details, go to our website https://applewoodshaverhouse.ca/events or call us at 416-622-4124.

Thanks to Robert Huntley for sending this photo of himself and his lovely wife, Phylis. Here, they are pictured with Rev. Stewart East presenting them their Marriage Certificate on December 27, 1985. Robert says, "I’m 6’ tall. Rev. East has a huge personality…" Agreed, Robert!

The Shaver family were Methodists, and were involved in establishing chapels in Islington Village and Lambton Mills - names that still exist in Etobicoke today. In 1864, James Woodsworth, a young student circuit-rider Minister who preached at the chapels in Islington Village and Lambton Mills, and another in Cooksville, boarded at Applewood, where he met Peter Shaver's daughter, Esther Josephine. They were married in 1868, and in 1874 their son, James Shaver Woodsworth, the namesake of the Foundation that runs present-day Applewood House, was born. {Credit: Etobicoke Remembered by Robert A. Did you know that, in 1820 (just over 200 years ago!), John Shaver was the first person in his family to come to Etobicoke? He was 21 years old. He purchased 100 acres of land east of Highway 427, between Burnhamthorpe Road and Bloor Street. This was the land that would come to be known as the original Applewood Farm.

Yesterday's Twilight Concert in the Park was fantastic! We had close to 200 people join us to enjoy the music. Kids played, neighbours met neighbours, families enjoyed a picnic under the apple trees, raffle tickets were bought, prizes were won, and it was just lovely! Thanks to the Etobicoke Community Concert Band for their performance, and to everyone who came out - neighbours of Applewood - The James Shaver Woodsworth Homestead and people from the farther reaches of the city! Looking forward to our next concert on July 5th!
