: Toddlers are insecure about your love too!

Before kids develop language, they use different ways to communicate their needs and wants to us. Often, this looks like crying or whining, which can be hard to understand or accept at times. Perhaps a child that is highly insecure about their place in your heart, may resort to different behaviours to validate your love to them. This could show up in a myriad of ways, such as:
consistently asking to be carried, even when they’re perfectly capable of walking
Asking for kisses, often
Clinging to your body, never leaving your side
Whining for no reason
Becoming weepy and crying
Asking for cuddles consistently, often

While some of these behaviours are considered ‘bad’ and others are ‘good’ and even nice ways to connect with your toddlers, they are also tell-tell signs that there’s a deeper underlying insecurity within them that needs to be addressed.
And from their perspective, not having full use of language and the ability to name emotions, they resort to these methods as a cry for support.

So next time your toddler is exhibiting these behaviours - stop, and consider what’s the feeling behind the action and most importantly, why are these feelings there? Perhaps there’s been stress or tension in the home, or simply a lot of change has happened in their routine, causing them to feel uncertain and unhinged.

So as we head into summer vacations, and break away from our daily routine, consider that these changes may bring about uncertainty in your toddler, and could show up as these behaviours.
What to do? Simply being aware of what’s driving this behaviour is enough to be able to lean into your child’s needs with gentleness, patience and reassurance.

: International Children’s Day
This past Saturday we celebrated International Children’s Day at Kidnasium. International Children’s day is a day we celebrate and protect children’s rights, access to education, and their right to have a happy and healthy childhood.

While International children’s Day should be every day, we wholeheartedly believe that children’s right to build a safe, stable future for themselves through access to education should be an everyday celebration.
And education means more than just going to school because learning and growth takes place outside the school, as much, if not more, than inside a school.

At Kidnasium, we teach children through play and physical movement many life skills we hope they take with them into the future. We teach them cooperation, working together as a team, listening to instructions and coaches, taking and implementing feedback, body awareness, and that physical movement helps regulate their wellbeing.

On a grander and more long-term scale, extracurricular activities cultivate leadership skills, time management skills, promote networking skills, fosters their confidence and ultimately, it leads to increased academic performance.

So let’s celebrate International Children’s Day every day and continue to support our children in building their future.

: Summer Fun☀️— Summer season is almost here! The countdown to end of school year is on, the days are longer, the sprinklers are on, the ice cream truck is rolling by.

Soon school will be over, and all of us parents out there will be scratching our heads for ways to keep our kids entertained for a few months.

Aside from the obvious camp option (and ps: Kidnasium has summer camp available with a new theme every week), there are other at-home options available for those in-between weeks when you decided not to opt in for camp:

-Grab a few flashlights out of the shed or garage, and play a good game of flashlight tag in your backyard. The kids will be giggling with laughter, and this will definitely go down in the memory bank!
-Tents are not just for the woods! Pitch a tent in your living room, set up pillows and blankets, and see how delighted they will be to play in and out of this make-believe structure.
-Grab a $2 jump rope and hop and skip your way down the driveway! And if you’ve got multiple kids and hands available, you can even teach them to do double-dutch!
-Pack up the car, a few blankets, some snacks and drive out to the country side and gaze at the stars! See the big dipper, the little dipper and even Orion’s belt! Teach them about shooting stars, the moon and the grandness of the universe.
-Dust off your artistic skills and create beautiful sidewalk chalk art alongside your kids.
-Turn on the sprinklers, get in your bathing suits, and jump, skip, run through the spraying water on a hot summer’s day.
And then get some ice cream! Always, get some ice cream!

: Show your child they’re important by changing ONE thing! And one thing only!

In today’s digital age, we are overly committed to one thing that’s been coming in the way of our children feeling their worth. You guessed it! It’s our phones. We love to carry them around, pull them out at any spare moment, and multitask our lives with them, constantly.

And when we do that, it makes our kids feel invisible.
So next time your child is so eagerly telling you about something that they’re thinking, put the phone down.

The next time your child wants you to watch their favourite show with them, put the phone down, and watch what interests them.

And next time you’re at their game, or sporting activity, don’t multitask. Put the phone down and watch their every move.

Because while it’s tempting to multitask and get another thing done, you’re missing out on the most important moments of your child’s life.

Show your child they’re more important than your phone. Show your child they’re THE MOST important thing you have.

: Helping Your Kid Love Their Sport. Did you know that approximately 70 percent of children will stop playing sports by the time they’re teenagers, with girls quitting at two times the rate as boys?! That’s concerning given the health and obesity epidemic our children’s generation is facing.

So how can we ensure our kids continue to engage in physical activities well into their teenage years?
We make sure they like, no, LOVE, what they do!

Here are 3 ways to help your kid LOVE their sport:

Be a role model for your children. Don’t just tell them physical activity is important, but show them you mean it. And show them the positive effects from ongoing physical activity. Active parents inspire active children, as they grow up used to seeing it ever-present in their lives.

Talk to your children. Ask them what they like about the sport or activity they’re currently involved in. Ask them what else they might like to try out. And remind them that anything they’re doing should first and foremost, be FUN!

Don’t be a sideline coach during their game. Step back and let the actual coaches do their job, motivate your child, and provide them with constructive feedback to increase their skill level.

Sit together on a feelings bench- It’s important to validate kids’ feelings (not their inappropriate behaviors), even when you don’t like it. This looks like sitting down with them ‘on the feelings bench’ and experiencing it with them in the moment they’re feeling it. It helps them tolerate, or even accept, their feelings - especially the ones that make them upset or uncomfortable.

In doing this, they slowly grow up comfortable with their varying ranges of emotions, and don’t defer to numbing their feelings as adults.

So allow their feelings to have space in your home, by sitting with them. This tells them we, as parents, still like them, even when they have tough feelings we don’t necessarily like.

After all, how can kids learn to tolerate feelings that we can’t tolerate in them?

A new month welcomes new goals! You can help your child learn the skill of goal-setting, which is critical for developing grit and just simply getting what you want out of life. Other reasons why your child should learn goal-setting include:

- it teaches them to take responsibility for their own behaviors and learning
- it promotes a “can-do” attitude
- it forms a powerful lifelong habit

: Why labeling kids is bad…Ever caught yourself labeling your child in your head, or when speaking about them? Oh, she’s a wild one, he’s so smart, he’s misbehaved, and so on.
And although you may not ever utter these labels to your child, they can still wreak havoc on your child’s identity and development.

Consider this: when you believe a child is ‘bad/rowdy’, you will automatically begin to treat them as if they’re bad. And when you treat them as if they’re bad, they start to believe they’re bad. And when they believe they’re bad, that’s when it becomes detrimental to them, because they continue to behave as if they’re bad.

And this concept translates to ‘good’ labels as well. For example, when you label a child as ‘smart’, they begin to internalize this label. And when they make a mistake, their internal worth which is now based on success and achievement, doesn’t live up. So when they fail, they become consumed because they cannot separate that internal worth and identity from their external reality.

Children are likely to live up to what you believe in them!✨

Play to Learn, Learn to Grow at Club Kidnasium.

Kidnasium was founded in the Mount Pleasant Village community over 20 years ago. It began as a gym that primarily focused on the development of physical literacy skills in young children through the use of recreational gymnastics. In December 2019 the company was officially re-branded to Club Kidnasium Discovery Studio – A Modern Day Village for Kids with a simple goal:

Create Inspiring spaces that provide children with the opportunity to wholeheartedly be kids while developing the life tools needed to become awesome adults.

Club Kidnasium is a 4,000 sq ft facility with a dedicated Physical Education Studio (Gym), Creative Art Studio and Multipurpose classroom with plans to add more additions. With the partnership of local businesses we have created a safe community space that impacts children’s lives through the power of play, the freedom to create and lifelong positive experiences. We have expanded our audience and now provide fun, safe and quality programs to children 14 and under all under one roof.
