Inspired by a Vogue cover from November 15th 1948 with the featured article “Christmas Finds: fashions to give and to wear”. Model Barbara Mullen photographed by John Rawlings.

We did not have a suitable late 1940s gown available, so we went with a 50s one in a festive burgundy red taffeta with matching bolero featuring rhinestone buttons. Worn with a faux pearl necklace, faux pearl earrings and white satin evening gloves, all from the collection.

Our vintage magazine archive is available for research and reference at a $5 per week rental cost.

Sophie Gimbel

Following our post earlier today in which we recreated an image that featured a dress by Sophie of Saks…..

Sophie was born in Texas in 1898. She married at age 19 and moved to Philadelphia. While she was raising her son, she worked as a part time stage costume designer. She and her husband divorced in 1926, after which she got a job as a stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue. In 1929, she was asked to take over the Salon Moderne at the Saks flagship store in New York and be its lead designer.
She often travelled to Paris to order designer clothing for the store, as it sold French couture as well as Sophie’s own collection. Some of the other labels included Chanel, Vionnet and Schiaparelli. She also made copies, as was common practise at the time. The Salon Moderne was not particularly successful before Sophie took it over but she soon popularized it, tripling sales in her department. She designed costumes for Broadway shows in order to gain publicity for the store.
She is credited with introducing culottes to the American luxury fashion market and pairing beaded sweaters with ball gowns. The gowns she designed were noted for their simplicity, elegance and luxe fabrics. She offered a number of classic designs each collection including strapless ballgowns with intricate detailing. The colour used in her work was subdued yet striking.
She erred more on the conservative side, critical of ever-shortening hemlines and exposed skin. She wasn’t a trendsetter but this allowed her to have a widespread appeal not enjoyed by the designers who were taking risks. Exclusive clientele wore her haute couture pieces. She lived the same lifestyle as her clients and knew exactly what they wanted.

Her label changed from “Sophie Gimbel” to “Sophie of Saks” in the 1940s. She appeared on the cover of Vogue’s inaugural American fashion issue in 1940. While the Parisian salons were closed during WWII, she created an American couture equivalent at Saks, which made her one of the world’s most influential designers at the time.
During the war, she played a major role in organizing the first combined showing of American fashion in a precursor to New York Fashion Week.

The new EU “General Product Safety Regulations” came into effect today. The regulations have forced a lot of small businesses both inside and outside of the EU to cease shipping to EU countries as, in addition to other requirements, an authorized representative of the business needs to be available in each country where orders are shipped to. This is not feasible for a lot of small businesses. As a result, we are forced to stop accepting orders from all 27 EU countries, as well as the 3 EEA countries of Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
Please note that orders to the UK and crown dependencies are not affected, except for those from Northern Ireland.
We hope that more information will become available and things will become clearer in the coming months for vintage clothing sellers around the world. Reason would suggest that clarification and amendments are imminent, which will hopefully result in sellers being able to reinstate shipping to the affected destinations.
We will keep you updated if any developments occur! For now, we apologize to our EU customers.

Inspired by an Emba fur advertisement in the Vogue Christmas Issue, December 1955 (from our reference library).

The model in the ad wears a white and silver gown designed by “Sophie” (Sophie Gimbel was designing for the Salon Moderne at Saks Fifth Avenue) and an “Autumn Haze” mink stole designed by Christian Dior. The ad was photographed by Virginia Thoren.

In our picture, Carolina wears a white 50s dress with silver detailing, a rhinestone bracelet, rhinestone earrings and a rhinestone brooch in her hair with a fur stole, all from the collection.

Our vintage magazine archive is available for research and reference at a $5 per week rental cost.

Watch out for our next post this afternoon all about Sophie Gimbel!

The set with the cropped jacket has the label “Ruth Young, Shayside Pittsburgh”. Ruth’s upscale clothing boutique opened in Pittsburgh in the 1960s. When this set was bought, Ruth’s boutique would have been an important Pittsburgh fashion destination, serving a well-to-do clientele. Ruth passed away in 2000 and the shop continued operating with her daughter and another business partner at the helm. It closed in 2012.

We started using our current inventory system in 2021: RTPro (rental tracker professional). This is a popular software for businesses who rent to the film industry. We were able to check our system and figure out what the top repeatedly rented items were in the past 3 years. The results were interesting and are pictured here! There is quite a bit of crossover in what productions they were used in, which shows that certain items fit the bill for many different briefs.

Do any of these items surprise you?

The boy’s blue 1970s sneakers and women’s 1970s denim vest are the top two; both were rented 7 times each during that time frame.

New inventory: a 1970s Oscar de la Renta Boutique gold and black brocade sleeveless cocktail dress and cropped jacket set, with the dress bodice adorned in black sequins ✨
The word “boutique“ on the label during this period referred to Oscar’s Ready to Wear collection, geared towards a younger, more price-conscious customer.

3 new glam dresses in the collection ✨

We’re making comparisons to Taylor’s stage costumes and outfits again this week as she finishes up her last shows in Toronto!

1. 1988 Zandra Rhodes blue bead and sequin dress. This dress was worn by director Jenny Wilkes to the 1988 Academy Awards when a film she directed (Making Waves) was nominated for best live action short film. Taylor has worn many blue outfits with beaded patterning including the Midnights bodysuits designed by Zuhair Murad and her 1989 2-piece designed by Roberto Cavalli. 🩵🤍

2. 80s lavender bead, sequin and glitter draped jersey dress.Taylor wore a lot of purple during the Speak Now Era. She brought it back for the Eras Tour with a number of sparkly purple ballgowns during the Enchanted segment. She also wears a purple beaded and sequinned dress for the Lavender Haze performance, designed by Oscar de la Renta. 💜

3. 90s dark blue sequin dress.Again, Taylor is no stranger to blue sequins. This calls to mind the blue sequin Reputation Tour dress, the Midnights bodysuit, the Roberto Cavalli Grammy’s 2023 outfit and many others! 💙🪩

🎬 Season 1 of the new TV series dropped today on ! It is based on the 1999 film of the same name, which was itself a retelling of the 1782 novel Dangerous Liaisons. Set on a Washington DC campus, the new series stars .Hook, , , and .
📍Filming took place in Toronto in 2023, eventually wrapping last January after a pause during the industry strikes.

We sold a lot of clothing to the production and they also rented a tuxedo from us for the character of Blaise. Although the series is set in the present day, we provided many vintage and designer items from the 80s and 90s, as well as assorted pieces from the 50s, 60s, 70s and more contemporary pieces. We’re excited to find out how these pieces were used for the characters. We also sold vintage fabrics and are curious to see what was made of them! Pictured here are some of the items they bought from us and the tux they rented for Blaise.

We want to thank the costume team for sourcing from us for this series. Costume Designer , Assistant Costume Designer , Costume Supervisor Erika Larner.

Ian’s item of the week is a 1970s coat with passementerie detailing throughout, originally sold at Mabel Danahy’s in Buffalo NY and acquired by Ian from Retrouver.biz here in Toronto.

Mabel Danahy’s ladies luxury clothing boutique operated in Buffalo for 97 years before closing in 2022 due the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic.
Mabel founded the store with her sister Elsie in 1925, with their mother Louise acting as vice president. “At the time, the Queen City was at it's zenith, and Delaware Avenue was lined with stately homes and elm trees. The Danahy shop was at the center of a prominent group of clothiers and seamstresses catering to a stylish clientele known as the carriage trade. Through the years, the street became an address synonmous with fashion."
Ruth Peachey took over ownership in 1961 and the store has changed locations a number of times, becoming known as simply ‘Danahy’s’. In 2012, Ruth passed the business on to her niece Elizabeth Lennon.
The store sold moderately priced to high end designer labels such as Bill Blass in the 1970s and Eileen Fischer in more recent years.
