We just spent the most incredible 3 days with this group of Grade 4s. We tackled the High Ropes Course, did some Archery and worked on our Fire Building Skills.

The highlight of the trip was taking them all out in Voyager Canoes over to an island and watching them use their new skills to build their own fire and cook their own lunch!

We can't wait to see them again next year to continue on with their Outdoor Education journey!

We're excited to welcome another school group this week! Tall Pines School had us plan their year end celebration trip for their senior grades and drove all the way out to join us at Snider Mountain Ranch!

This Ontario school travelled out to New Brunswick and will spend the next 5 days going on TimberTop Adventures Ziplines, saddling up for some Horseback Riding, zooming past each other while Go Karting, busting out of Mystery Moncton Escape Rooms, exploring the ocean floor and tidal changes at Hopewell Rocks and then conquering new heights at Montmorency Falls in Quebec on their way home!

We've had a fantastic few days hosting a private school group retreat! These grade 5's conqured some fears, challenged themselves and developed some incredible leadership skills! Looking forward to seeing them again in the fall as they complete even more outdoor adventures!

Did you remember to order your baked goods if not making them yourself? Orders for bakeries usually need to go in about 2 weeks before, but are picked up the morning of your event. It's best if you can have a friend or family member pick these up for you so you aren't rushing when trying to get everything else set. Don't hesitate to enlist friends!

It's time to get those groceries about 2-3 days before to make sure your produce is as fresh as possible! Non-perishables can be collected a few weeks before (especially if you watch for sales) if you have somewhere to store them, but is always good to double check your items a few days leading up to your event. There's always 1 or 2 items you forgot!

Check the Weather! The week leading up to your event you are going to want to check the weather, not only for the day of, but a day or two leading up to the event if its outdoors. Rain, high winds, etc can make setting up early difficult! Create a backup plan in case of inclement weather - rent a tent? move it inside? postpone? Thing of all these options in advance so you aren't scrambling the day before.

One week before the event it's time to check in with all those invited guests you haven't heard from yet. Sometimes people forget to rsvp or just assume you know they will be there, but its best to get a firm head count about 7 days before!

Whether you need a place for guests to stay overnight, or a helping hand serving food, be prepared to ask your friends for assistance, before, during and after. People are usually eager and willing to lend a hand, but just need a specific task to be assigned. Someone to remember to turn the outdoor lights on so guests can leave safely, or to empty the trash after dinner can really take some of the load off your plate!

Don't forget about activities! What are your guests going to do? Will there be a bonfire? Yard games? Dancing? Board Games? Trivia? The opportunities are endless to add a little fun to your event. Pinterest has some wonderful ideas to enhance your next gathering!

After you tackle the invitations and menu, its time to start looking at decor. There are many online places to get excellent party supplies, but many need to be ordered a few weeks in advance.

Leave yourself time to gather props, order dishes, plan balloon arches, etc. Think of your theme and how you want to make the event pop with colour and props that attract the eye and kick it up a level!

One month before is also the time you need to start thinking about your menu. What kinds of foods will you serve? What fits the theme? Are there guests with allergies or dietary restrictions you need to account for? How many courses? Buffet style or sit down? etc.

Planning your menu is a major part of your budget as well. Keep in mind how many guests, how much they may eat and who is preparing the food. Are you having the event catered? or looking to pre-make food so you don't spend the entire party in the kitchen?

One month before your party date is the time when invitations go out! Any sooner than this you risk people forgetting about the party, any later and you risk them already having plans.

Invitations are the first glimpse guests get about your event. Try to make them match the theme. Nowadays, its perfectly acceptable to send digital invites, but the old school part of me loves sending out invitations in the mail. There's just something about opening an envelope and holding something physical in your hand that makes the event seem extra special!

Next step... guest list! Who do you want there? Are there mandatory guests and optional guests? Are children included? Plus ones? How big do you want your event? A carefully curated guest list ensures everyone feels welcome and creates an inviting experience for new comers. If you are inviting someone new, try and make an effort to introduce them to people they will have things in common with to help break the ice.

One of the most important steps is choosing your venue that fits your theme and ideas. Is it something that can be hosted in your home, or backyard? Do you need to rent a tent? Would it be better in a rental hall, hotel banquet room, or wedding event space etc. Think of how many people you plan to invite and the kind of space you will need. Is it a dinner? Is there dancing? Will there be games? Or are people just mingling with a cocktail?

Many communities have lots of rental options if you aren't comfortable hosting a party in your own home. Check out town park rental options, legions, town halls, art galleries, masonic halls and even most churches have rental spaces for events a low costs or even by donation.

Now it's time to choose WHEN you are going to have your party. Several factors can contribute to this decision - do most of your planned guests have tricky work schedules? Does your ideal date overlap with an important holiday that would make it hard for people to come? Do people tend to travel certain times of the year? etc

After you've decided on a theme, its time to determine your budget. Try and think of all the factors that go into a party (depending on the type)... food, drinks, decor, entertainment, activities, venue rental if needed, parking costs etc. The average party can cost anywhere from $10-$50 per person.

Are you throwing someone a birthday party? What do they like? Where have they always wanted to go? What are their favourite foods? Colours? etc. Use what you know about the person to plan the perfect party theme.
