Melfort RCMP News --October 8 to October 14, 2024

Oct 8 -- The detachment received a call from a resident of James Smith Cree Nation because her boyfriend took her truck sometime over the night without her permission. The truck was returned to her within the day.

Oct 8---The detachment received a call from a resident of Melfort because her two teenage daughters left the house and had not returned. She was concerned for their safety and did not know where they were. The teenagers returned to home 15 minutes after the police were called.

Oct 9 -- The police received a report from Social Services about some disturbing behaviour being displayed by some young people. Police will looking into the matter to determine if it is a police responsibility.

Oct 9 -- Police received a report of possible abuse by some parents in Naicam. Police are working with Social Services.

Oct 10 -- Police received a report of a vehicle that left a gas station in Melfort without paying for $60 worth of gasoline. The vehicle left towards the west and the licence plate provided to the police was not correct. Police are reviewing video surveillance.

Oct 10 - Police received a call from a resident of James Smith Cree Nation because someone broke their TV and PS5. Names of the suspects were provided to police and it is being investigated to determine what exactly happened.

Oct 11 -- The detachment received numerous reports of break and enters and attempted break and enters to garages and sheds in Melfort. Occurred sometime over the night and is being investigated by the police.

Oct 11 -- The detachment received a call from a Parole Officer in Prince Albert because the full parole of a resident of James Smith Cree Nation was revoked. A warrant of apprehension was issued for the male. Police located the male at home and returned him to the Saskatchewan Penn in Prince Albert.



Oct 12

Night shift members were on patrol and located some fires in the RM of Fletts Springs. Police contact the Fire Dispatch and were advised that they were controlled burns and there was no need for concern.

Oct 12 -- Police received a report of a possible impaired driver in Birch Hills and police saw the vehicle parked at the bar earlier in the evening. Vehicle located by police but it was parked and not being driven. Police were not able to arrest the driver for impaired driving so they ensured that they would not be driving later.

Oct 13 -- Police received a call from a resident of Melfort about two males who were in the caller’s yard. Police located the two males and ensure that they did not return to the area.

Oct 13 -- While on patrol, police were approached by a 17 year old in Star City. While at a pit party, the male was sucker punched by another male and his jaw was broken in three places. The male suspect who did the punching, is now being sought by police.

Oct 14 -- Night shift members on patrol and stopped a vehicle in Kinistino. The driver had been drinking and provided breath samples into the roadside screening device. The driver’s licence was suspended for 60 days, vehicle impounded for 3 days and also issued a ticket for driving without a supervising driver.

Oct 14 --The detachment received a report from a resident of Melfort because their vehicle had been broken into and damaged.

Report:
Sept 12-17, 2024 - Total of 100 files over this time period
Sept 12
The detachment received two reports of thefts that occurred in Melfort. A resident of Melfort had some items stolen from a vehicle overnight which included some hand tools. The other report was a licence plate that was removed from a vehicle while it was parked at business in Melfort while it was being worked on.
Sept 12
Police were asked to conduct a wellbeing check on a resident of Naicam because she was recently fired from her job. Police attended and everything was well. Family members were also going to follow-up.
Sept 13
Traffic enforcement was conducted in the Star City area and on Highway 6 between Melfort and Naicam. Six traffic violations were issued to motorists.

Sept 13
Police received a call of a possible impaired driver in Melfort. The caller lent his vehicle to the driver and thought they were going to a bar in Melfort. Members made patrols but the bars were closed and they were familiar with the driver. Police were with that driver in Star City 45 minutes prior and they were not driving impaired.

Sept 14
Call received about a vehicle being driven around James Smith Cree Nation and the driver was impaired. Police located the vehicle and driver who was arrested for impaired driving. The driver was taken to the detachment for breath samples which the results were below the legal limit. Driver received a provincial driving suspension.
Sept 14
Police received a call about a male who on was on the shoulder of Highway 6 and appeared to need help. Police located the male and provided him with a ride to Melfort.
Sept 15
Prince Alert Detachment received a call about a possible impaired driver on the highway in their area. They were not able to locate and asked that Melfort members look the vehicle. The vehicle was located on James Smith Cree Nation and the driver was arrested for impaired driving. The driver was taken to the detachment for breath samples that read 80 and 70 mg%. The driver received a provincial driving suspension and the vehicle was impounded.

Sept 15
The detachment received a call about a vehicle that was parked on the street in Birch Hills and the caller thought it was suspicious and thought the vehicle might be stolen. Police located the vehicle and it was not stolen and the driver was not doing anything that needed police intervention.

Sept 16
Police stopped a vehicle in Naicam because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver was also tested for Cannabis consumption which they failed. The driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Sept 16
The detachment received a call about an adult male in Naicam and the caller was concerned about his mental state. Police attended and ensured he received the medical assessment that he needed.

Sept 17
The detachment received a call about a stolen vehicle from the RM of Star City. The vehicle is a 2017, blue Dodge ram with Saskatchewan licence plate 074 JWC. If anybody sees it, they are asked to contact the Melfort RCMP or 911.

Sept 17
The detachment received a call about a male at a residence on James Smith Cree Nation and he was not “listening” to her. Police were not needed.

That works out to a little over $1,000 a week. Kitchen staff prepare the meals at 24 Sussex, which are transported to Rideau Cottage.
