we had this fish swim thru the audience 2 years in a row
a 15 minute excursion into the importance of the salmon
all the young ones being the waves as it meandered thru out was a heart warming sight...so glad it has a home for all to see....such a community building project

The Quw’utsun Stseelthun Friendship Project recently celebrated the new home of a puppet created by Cowichan Knowledge Keepers, youth from Cowichan Tribes and the broader community.

Cowichan Women Against Violence hosted the celebration where lead artist Shawn Johnny and the youth who helped make the puppet shared their experiences working on the project. All those involved spoke of how incredible the experience was and how hopeful they were about projects like this helping to heal the community and the Quw'utsun Sta'lo'. The puppet, pictured here, is of a massive salmon made out of nylon and cane, a material similar to bamboo. It takes four people to operate the puppet! It’s quite the sight and I recommend going to check it out at the library if you get the chance. (Thanks for sharing this story and photo Eric Richards!)

All the love going out to Longevity John Falkner today.

Long John is an institution in the Cowichan Valley. His commitment, steady as West Coast rain, has been behind artists from Vancouver Island, across Canada, and around the globe. It is beyond imagination, the diversity, sheer number, and incredible talent that has performed on one of his stages or events, over the years. As local musicians, we have certainly benefitted from his mentorship and his commitment. If you recall, the Barroness was born on the Duncan Showroom stage...

In our experience, it is rare to meet an individual who gives this much time and effort into any cause. It is even more rare that a person does so at such a grass-roots level. He is not backed by corporate money, and there is no promise of wealth or prestige. It is just a person who, through blood, sweat and tears, puts it all on the line for live music.

The King Charles III Coronation Medal is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities, demonstrated exceptional service, or achieved remarkable milestones. Truly, Longevity John Falkner fits this description. Heartfelt congratulations on this well-deserved award!

The 39 Days of July has a rich history

The Duncan Cowichan Festival Society brings you the 39 days of July. This year we are pivoting to a Virtual 39 Days of July to comply with the very necessary COVID-19 rules. We are celebrating 41 years of musical and arts festivals in downtown Duncan and we want to continue.

39 Days will provide in 2020 another excellent lineup of performers. They will perform at the well know Duncan Showroom and broadcast through live streaming on both our page and our YouTube channel. Our page is www.39daysofjuly.ca and the YouTube channel is posted on this page.

YAY to LongJohn, Ted Cadillac, and Trevor Linde for once again pulling together some stellar performers and offering free music to build community. And also YAY to Long John and his team for reaching out and giving young people a chance to serve the community both through assisting with sound, set up and pulling down each day as well as performing! How great is that! - A testimonial from a happy visitor to many of the 39 Days of July events. It’s a rather fun place to be!

2020’s 39 Days of July will be different, but will contain the same level of spirit and talent and community as all the other years. Our usual program advertisers won’t have a program to advertise in but we are grateful that many are still making donations. If you like what you see, our website has a Donate/TipJar button and we would be most pleased to any donations whatsoever. We want to stay alive to recreate our outdoor experience next year.
