Introspective Growth: Discover the Possiblities

In this exhibition, we invite you to embark on a deeply personal and reflective journey through the abstract. Each piece on display is a testament to the power of introspection, transformation, and growth. The works explore the unseen, the emotional landscapes that reside within each of us, and the challenges and triumphs that shape our identities.

**Themes of the Exhibition**

At the core of these abstract paintings is the theme of inner evolution. From the complex interplay of light and shadow to the fluidity of colors and forms, each artwork captures a moment in the artist’s personal journey. Whether it’s the chaos of self-discovery or the serenity of acceptance, every brushstroke reflects an emotional truth.

Where should we begin when we attempt to understand what Being is and the significance of the Being of all things? Two artists try to respond to these questions about the ontology of life in their respective artistic languages.

The philosopher Heidegger once proposed that solving the problem of Being should start with the Being of the problem itself. It‘s rational that artists view everything from the perspective of humans themselves. They express their inner cognition in different artistic ways. These two artists have made their own choices and established a relationship with Being, exploring the characteristics of human life.

Xiangmei Su is a multimedia artist from China who now lives in Canada. She received her BA in Visual Art at UBC. She works with installation, painting, drawing, photography, and video. Su has exhibited several solo and group shows in both China and Canada.

Her first solo show (The Wind) was exhibited in Changshu Art Museum in China in 2012. Su was in an artist-in-residence in Dr. Sun Yet- Sen Classical Chinese Garden Vancouver from January to June,
2022. She has published two solo exhibition catalogues. In 2020, she was invited for a Tedx Talk.
In 2022, she was an Exhibition Advisor for West Vancouver Community Art’s Council’s Jury at
the Kay Meek Art Centre.

Her art practices deal with the relations between spaces (cultural, natural, social and individual) and her own cultural identity. The subject of immigration is the one that holds personal meaning for her. Like other immigrants, from her hometown, Changshu, China to
Vancouver, Canada, she has been crossing borders and cultures, struggling with the formation of
a transnational identity and re-identifying herself as Chinese-Canadian. As a new immigrant in
Canada, she experienced both peace and conflict. On one hand, she need to learn and understand
the newness in order to fit into her host country. On the other hand, she always feels the primordial pull of her origin.

Notions of identity and belonging are consistently in flux and are always being renegotiated by the individual. After struggling between these two cultures for years, she realized that it was impossible and unreasonable for her to actually have a single cultural identity. She started to ask herself what it would be like to live ‘in-between’ spaces, cultures and countries.

One of our artist Pepe Hidalgo's style is figurative and abstract narrative. His figurative
work is not related to realism, it is created from his imagination.

Hidalgo's paintings achieve strength through the glazes or velatures he applies. He will
apply two or three to a painting, they help create a sense of space.
There is a distinct element present in his paintings, a string or cord that acts as the umbilical cord that unites him to the universe, and allows him to time travel back and forth as it supports his weight and pulls him back into reality.

Hidalgo predominantly paints with acrylic and sketches. His artistic
process started as a child during frequent visits to the Museo del Prado in Madrid. His work is influenced by Velazquez, Zurbaran, El Bosco, and the
Impressionists.

Art has allowed him to "free himself" and express himself without prejudice, and to dare to do what he feels without expectations. Many people ask him where he gets his ideas for his paintings. When you know him you realize he mixes his knowledge of astrology, mythology, history, life, and experiences. It is all manifested and expressed in his paintings.

Mud for bone, flame for tone, no two alike.

The art of functional “tool” is filled with the mundane ways and explosive fire and smoke

A simple revelation stemming from sensitivity is what we perceive from the beauty of clay art

Yet the science behind the creation process involve expert handling of the lines, materials, tehcniques and scientific quantification

The way of “Tool”

Fine things in everyday life are our “tool”

It encompasses the fundamental passion, zeal, purity and innocence.

Clay tools become a permanent body after kiln heating

It is perhaps an artificial fossil

Its benefactors are not limited to us,

But to nature, other species

And its interactions with the rest of the living beings

This is a direction of my art creation

And the focus of my art before each kiln process

I try to stay away from using too many tools, and rely on my hands for form

Let the clay and fire tell their own story

To say that ceramics is my profession or obsession is inaccurate, it is more of my lifestyle

Made by man, formed by nature

This is and has always been my pursuit during ceramics creation.

During the wood kiln process, there are way too many unknown and uncontraolble factors

This is also the most mesmerizing part of it all

Because of the carbon ash from wood burining, the moving flames

Clay becomes unpredictable .

These moments are unique, as are the products that are result;

The process creates wares you see, but hidden behind are the ways of creation that you don’t normally see

The Artisans’ skills and attitude determine the wares’ basic qualities, but the bones and tones set the upper limit

Clayware come from a pair of hands, travel through soaring heat and ashed flames, but the end results are dependent on those who choose them.
