What does it mean to be “American”? Against the backdrop of a second Trump presidency, the 2025 Phil Lind Initiative, presented by the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs and the Chan Centre, grapples with questions of identity amid turmoil. From candid discussions about political polarization and systemic inequality to comedic satire and immersive art installations, this series illuminates the complexities of belonging and identity in the United States.

Speakers for include six-term Republican congressman and U.S. Air Force veteran, Rep. Adam Kinzinger; comedian, writer and actress, Ziwe; Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, performer and installation artist Raven Chacon and award-winning author, Heather Cox Richardson. The series kicks off with the bomb, an immersive art installation at the AHVA Gallery, created by filmmaker Smriti Keshari and writer Eric Schlosser.
