"The whimsy, sense of humour, skill, mix of music genres - just superb. Thank you for bringing them to the Chan. I left the performance with slightly achy cheek muscles - and realized I'd been grinning for the last 70 minutes. This was a hidden gem in plain sight." - Chan Centre Patron 🌟

Thanks to all those who came out for Conrad Tao and Caleb Teicher: Counterpoint! It was a fantastic evening with piano, tap dancing, and lots of laughter.

“No harpist thus far has been more capable of combining all of the modern harp traditions — from Salzedo, through Dorothy Ashby, through Alice Coltrane — with such strength, grace and commitment.” - The New York Times

Brandee Younger will perform at the Chan Centre on Friday, Feb 28 as part of Translinear Light: The Music of Alice Coltrane.

She is the first Black woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition, and has dedicated much of her career to Alice Coltrane's music. Simply put, there is no harpist better than her to be part of this concert celebrating the legacy of Alice Coltrane.

The Chan Centre is honoured to have received $300,000 from Canadian Heritage for critical AV system upgrades.

The support we have received through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund is not just an investment in technology—it is an investment in creative excellence, community engagement, and the transformative power of art.

We want to acknowledge the Government of Canada for its support, as well as thank Taleeb Noormohamed, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament (Vancouver Granville) and Honourable Joyce Murray, Member of Parliament (Vancouver Quadra), and UBC President Dr. Bacon for joining us last week to commemorate the occasion.

****

"Tap dance is interdisciplinary inherently, because it makes sounds and it looks like something, and the combination of those two things together is hopefully greater than the sum of its parts. And not to sound simple, but it’s just really fun for me. " - Caleb Teicher

Read this interview ahead of Caleb's tap dance performance with pianist Conrad Tao! See it all live on Wednesday, February 12 at the Chan Centre. Tickets available at chancentre.com

🚨New show added to the 24/25 season!🚨

Tickets to Echo: Memories of the World go on sale at February 6 at 12pm.

Bringing together Gryphon Trio, mezzo-soprano Marion Newman Nege’ga, and narrator čačumḥi aaron wells, Echo is a multimedia concert that offers visions of a resilient future.

This concert honours those who have fought against oppression while exploring how history is erased, altered, and attacked. Through storytelling, film, and the music of composers past and present, Echo unearths memories that have long been suppressed.

New show added to the 24/25 season! Tickets for Ana Tijoux go on sale January 31 at 10am.

Ana Tijoux, one of the most important Latin American artists of all time, is known for her unapologetically political music that empowers women and gives voice to the marginalized. Ranked third on Billboard's “Most Essential Spanish-Language Rappers of Yesterday and Today,” she continues to break barriers with her powerful rhymes and seductive rhythms.

In 2024, the Latin Grammy-winner released VIDA, her first album in nearly a decade. Praised as a “joyous look at grief in all its forms,” (Pitchfork) it reinforces her legacy as a fearless artist that faces adversity with a smile.
