On November 5, 2022, we lost a valuable member of our community, Scouter Eric Cheung. Eric was a founding member and one of the longest service scouters of our group. He was also a dedicated scouter at the 4th Northview Burnaby Scout Group and 23rd Elsie Roy Scout Group. More importantly, Eric was a beloved son, brother, and friend to many of us in the Scouting community, past and present.

As mentioned at Eric's memorial, while his time with us was shorter than most, he lived a full life dedicated to service--to his family, the Scouting community, and the Canadian Armed Forces. Eric personified selflessness and exemplified the positive values that we all strive to live by. Eric's passing was sudden and unexpected, leaving our group wondering how we can best remember his life and recognize his contributions.

After a year of deliberation and in memory of the first year of Eric’s passing, the 180th Pacific Coast Scout Group intends to commission a park bench in his honor. We feel that Eric's life should be celebrated and appreciated for generations to come. We plan to establish a bench at Iona Beach Regional Park, where Eric facilitated and attended many of our Group’s investiture ceremonies.

We understand that Eric had an impact on many of those around him and therefore, we would like to extend an invitation to anyone who wishes to contribute to this initiative. Any funds over what is required for the bench will be forwarded to the Royal Canadian Legion on behalf of Eric and his family.

Once we confirm the completion of the bench and location, we will advise all those interested to attend a ceremony for the reveal. We welcome anyone inspired by Eric's life to join us for an opening ceremony of the bench, which is scheduled for mid-January 2024.

If you are interested in attending the ceremony, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/K9FNtiKspyh11VSd9

If you are interested in contributing to the funding of this bench, please donate through https://www.scouts.ca/donate/online-ways-to-donate.html as a designated contribution to the 180th Pacific Coast Rover Scout Group. Private message us for other methods to contribute.

Let's hear it from our Rover crew Alumni, podcast guest, and host of on YouTube - Mostafa Nejati "I moved to Canada back in 2014 and I came here from Malaysia...I am originally from Iran but prior to that, I lived in Malaysia for several years. When you move to a new country and have to start fresh, one of the key things for me was building relationships. Right off the bat, I tried to expand my network and get to know as many like-minded people in my field. And the [180th] Crew was one of the best things that happened to me when I moved to Canada. I had a chance to meet amazing people who were very supportive and like-minded...and gave me lots of learning opportunities that way."

Let's hear what Shirvin Lee, our crew's alumni, says about her experience as a Rover. 🙌

"Being a member of the Rover Crew was the first time I truly considered what meant. When you’re 20 years old, it’s unlikely you’re going to be given the opportunity to lead a project, work with a budget, hone your leadership skills, and learn new tools with like-minded individuals. Now, imagine all of this tied in with to support your community. Over the course of five years, I was constantly provided with opportunities to personally and translate many of these skills into my professional life. I learned how to tweak my and work style based on the strengths of my teammate, how to organize an international service trip to support Mexican , and most importantly, I felt like I was constantly encouraged and supported by everyone to continue and . I believe that you get to decide who you surround yourself with and what you want your growth to look like. What’s your next step?"

We want to take this opportunity to recognize Scouter David for his 10+ years of service to the Scouting Movement. Since joining the Crew in 2011, Scouter David has contributed to many teams, including: planning outdoor activities (IOP), onboarding new members, pairing rovers with mentors, providing recruitment and program support to scout groups (SGS), and supporting various community service and fundraising projects. When we have outdoor activities, Scouter David is usually our carpool driver and first aider. Scouter David is currently the group commissioner for the 23rd Elsie Roy Scout Group and Scouter for our Crew. Thank you Scouter David for your holistic approach to personal development, support, patience, selflessness, and friendship!

We want to take this opportunity to recognize Scouter Paul for his 10+ years of service to the Scouting Movement. Scouter Paul was one of the first Rovers to join the Crew in 2008. As one of the longest-serving members of our Group, he has participated in five of the Crew's International Service Projects, led as Akela for the 23rd Elsie Roy Cub Pack, Group Commissioner for the Crew, one of the first group of rovers to spearhead the Scout Group Support dept (SGS) and Personal Development dept (pDev). There really isn't a team, project, or role Scouter Paul hasn't helped with. Thank you Scouter Paul for your generosity, million ideas, support, positivity, and brain power.
