Not a fairy tale, but a helluva love story. My fiancé Kaila and I had met a couple of times before we actually MET. I was working as a manager at a brand-new night club in Edmonton located on Whyte ave, which if you don’t know Edmonton, is the heartbeat of it’s nightlife. The bar I was working at was located upstairs with a handful of boutique clothing stores downstairs. Our opening weekend was just starting to kick off, the room was filling with beautiful people everywhere, and it was a great vibe! I was shaking hands with the who’s who of the Edmonton hospitality scene and feeling on top of the world. I got a radio call that someone from one of the stores downstairs needed to talk to a manager about water leaking through their roof. The last thing I wanted to do was leave this party we were throwing, but I also had to be a good neighbor to the other businesses in the building, so down I go. I remember getting to the bottom of the stairs and seeing this strikingly beautiful dark-haired girl with a funky style and bangs, standing there waiting with a scowl on her face. “Oh god, here we go,” I thought to myself. I introduced myself to her as the manager of the bar and she did not seem impressed. I was trying to be very charming, to no avail. She just wanted the water cleaned and someone to explain to her owner why all their inventory was soaked. All I wanted to do was get to know this beautiful stranger better, but I also realized she probably wasn’t interested in small talk, and just wanted to get this figured out. I left it at that and hoped to myself that we might cross paths again.
Fast forward about six years later, I was still in the hospitality industry, but working at another job. I was asked to work the beer gardens at an extreme sports festival happening in Edmonton’s Hawrelak park. The beer gardens were not exactly a bustling area as most people brought their kids. I was getting bored and could tell there were people who were thirsty, but had their kids so they couldn’t come get a beer. I had a brilliant idea; I grabbed as many beers as I could, found a golf cart, loaded it up, and started an impromptu delivery service. Some other bartenders saw what I was doing and hopped on for the ride. There were five of us selling beers out of this golf cart, but there was this one girl with bangs who looked so familiar, and I had no idea who she was. She was laughing at everything, her hair was blowing in the wind while were cruising in that cart, a bit of a wild child and so intriguing. Once the day ended, I asked my friend Andrea who the girl on the cart was. Andrea replied, “That’s Kaila Schmidt, you guys are going to get married.” My heart fluttered a bit, mostly at how ridiculous that seemed. I blushed, brushed it off, and carried on with my day.
Fast forward again months later, and I’m helping open another new bar on Whyte ave. We are having our first orientation with the new staff and in walks the girl with the bangs from the festival! I was flustered as I didn’t think I’d see her again, and I could still hear Andrea’s voice in my head, “you guys are going to get married.” I am not speechless often, but I had no words, so I didn’t go speak to her. As I was collecting all the new staff’s paperwork, I wanted to know more about this girl with the bangs. I looked at her resume and saw that she was the store manager at the boutique under the bar that flooded. It finally clicked, this was the same girl I had been smitten with while dealing with a leak years ago, that I never had the guts to pursue.
As we started working together, Kaila and I became fast friends. There was a strict no-dating policy with management and staff, so I tried to put my feeling about her out of my head. I focused on the work, and our friendship. We would often meet up for many beers on our days off, and we would help each other with relationship advice, life guidance, and anything in between as nothing was off limits for us. Then one day something happened. It was my Sunday day off, so a group of us met at a pub to watch some football and drink. I wasn’t feeling so great but shrugged it off. As I continued drinking, the pain in my stomach grew worse and worse and I collapsed and went to the hospital. Turns out I had severe pancreatitis and was placed in the ICU for three days. I was not ready to give up drinking as it was such a big part of my life working in the hospitality industry. A few weeks later after work, I called up my old drinking buddy Kaila to meet for some beers. She agreed; we had a few, a few more, and she asked me about my trip to the hospital. I hadn’t told many people exactly what happened, but I told her the truth. She didn’t say much but seemed like she was in deep thought. Shortly after we split a cab home and she was dropped off first. I turned to give her a hug like always, and she moved in with the most passionate kiss I’ve ever experienced. I was absolutely stunned; she smiled, jumped out of the taxi, and ran inside her apartment. The entire ride home my mind was racing and I didn’t know what to do next.
The next day at work I asked her if she remembered what had happened the night before, as we had been drinking. She just smirked and said, “of course I do.” I didn’t press any further. That night I asked if she wanted to go grab some beers after work, hoping for a repeat of the night before. She said “how about we just watch a movie instead. I don’t need you dying on me, I think I wanna keep you around for a while.” Not too long after that I quit that job and took a new one and we had officially started dating. We didn’t spend more than a couple nights apart for the next four and a half years after that. She had the patience of a saint while I struggled hard with quitting drinking, but I had my girl with the bangs by my side the entire way. I can honestly say she saved my life with her support for my recovery. After my first full year of sobriety, we decided to make the move from Edmonton to Victoria to get a fresh start on our lives. We spent months renovating our house, she found a job in a new career path, and we have been focusing on our health and working out. The day we moved into our new house in Victoria and started the beginning of our new lives here, I proposed to my best friend and she said yes! I’m now coming up on my second full year of sobriety, and we would like to start planning our wedding and starting the family I didn’t think I’d ever have, This wedding giveaway would be the ultimate thank you to the woman who saved my life, and loved me unconditionally…the cute girl with the bangs.
