Tuesday thoughts on sustainability in the floral industry, after filming for ‘Sustainably Wed,’ a docu-series forged by on Sustainability in the Wedding Industry: 1. Big changes are made when collectively, we make small changes. Making sustainable choices doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach - in fact, just like anything, taking on too much at once can lead to burn out. Start small: maybe for you this means eliminating flower foam from one wedding every month and simply not purchasing it again when you run out. Maybe for another this means sourcing flowers locally as often as possible for an entire season.
2. Your efforts may vary on your capacity and ability to make sustainable choices. Purchasing flowers is a privilege. Flowers are a luxury item and not everyone can afford them. On Vancouver Island I have the privilege of sourcing flowers from local growers but in many countries, this isn’t as readily available and even ‘local’ flowers have been treated with chemicals.
3. Support healthy, open dialogue about sustainability. No one likes to be shamed or made to feel as though what they are doing isn’t enough. Welcome questions and conversation with curiosity and warmth.
4. Sustainability needs to apply not only to the choices we are making regarding our business, but also our life. I learned this the hard way in 2021. I was so consumed with making business decisions that were in line with reducing carbon emissions and sourcing flowers locally, that I forgot the most important thing to sustain is myself and my family. Take care of yourself and the people who are important to you. Your life’s work needs to be sustainable for your body and your mind.

This August wedding will always be a favourite: a generous palette, island-grown flowers, my favourite terracotta vessels, intentional event design and planning by , and details captured perfectly by . I remember this sense of freedom while working on each piece, having such an incredibly trusting couple, and I was able to sink right into the flowers. Looking back now (this wedding took place in 2019), it was truly the beginning of my exploration with colour and around this time I began to feel like I was finding my own style. I stopped taking in as much visual content, and instead focussed on the flowers. Flowers are wildly generous and forgiving, much more so than I, and even when I struggle creating they’re there to welcome me back the next day, nodding heads arching in the direction they hope to be celebrated within a design, hopeful I get it right, but also happy to just be.

I am very aware of how much this page highlights bouquet design and little else! The truth is, I often take my own photos (on my trusty iPhone); I have a little pocket of side light in my studio that allows for lovely bouquet images on bright days (when it’s overcast, that’s a whole other story!). For images of our larger installation work and centrepieces, I am at the mercy of our clients’ incredible photographers. you always capture the details perfectly, thank you ♥️

Probably one of the first bridal bouquets I ever made that didn’t include imported flowers (ie: Roses). I was given a brief of green and white, and July did the rest. Grateful for an open planner () and bride who let me celebrate Sweet Pea and Poppy as the main event 🤍
