I painted this last year after the fires that swept through our region. As I drive along HWY 16 between Evansburg and Wildwood, this painting can be seen in real life. The charred remains of the forest are bursting with colour as fireweeds take over the area.

Our hearts go out to everyone in Jasper, who have lost so much- but continue to be rays of light in the dark. Our communities are wonderful examples of how people can come together to overcome and start again-just like the forest is bursting with new life now.

Dear Jasperites,

I write to you today with profound sorrow as we begin to come to terms with the devastating impact of last nightโ€™s wildfire that has ravaged our beloved community. The destruction and loss that many of you are facing and feeling is beyond description and comprehension; my deepest sympathies go out to each of you.

Our first priority continues to be your safety and well-being. The Incident Management Team together with responders on the ground, continue to work valiantly to protect our town โ€“ our home โ€“ and to coordinate supports for evacuees in other communities.

I want to assure you that your Mayor and Councillors are committed to supporting our community through this truly unprecedented challenge and beyond. We will work closely with all levels of government, other organizations, and volunteers to coordinate relief efforts and provide essential resources and information.

Your resilience and strength have always been the backbone of our community. In the coming days and weeks, we will rally together, support one another, and begin the daunting process of recovery.
Please continue to be patient and take care of yourselves and your loved ones.

This experience is tremendously traumatic for each of us and for the community. I encourage you to reach out to your neighbours, colleagues and friends: share your grief; share your pain; stay connected.

Offer a helping hand, a listening ear, a supportive word where you can, and know that we are all in this together.

With unwavering support and resolve,

Mayor Ireland

I noticed that the original Welcome to Evansburg sign needed some love! With some help from Yellowhead County, I was able to bring the sign home to begin restoring it.
It was almost at the point where it was too far gone to be saved-but I really hope to bring new life to this quintessential piece of Evansburg's history. I'll be posting more on my journey restoring this piece over the next month.

Let me know in the comments if I should make any adjustments or leave the colour scheme as it always has been!

EWF061 July 10, 2024. 9:00 PM UPDATE

EWF061 is currently burning OUT OF CONTROL and located 18 km northeast of Cynthia, 20 km southwest of Wildwood and 6.5 km east of highway 753. It's estimated to be 73.5 ha in size. There are 24 firefighters, six pieces of heavy equipment and two helicopters. Airtankers responded and assisted with fire suppression. Heavy equipment will be working over night in hopes to build containment line around the perimeter. Crews will be returning to the fire line in the morning.

There is no impact to assets or homes. Yellowhead County is working with Alberta Wildfire and has equipment and 14 firefighters on scene to support the suppression of this wildfire.

Firefighters are removing available fuel from the wildfire to prevent the spread into nearby vegetation. This method is often used to "bring" the wildfire to where crews can anchor it to a natural break, like a road. (July 10, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. EWF061).[Photo from AB Wildfire]

Have you ever noticed how I (Maddy) sign my artwork?

Around 15 years ago, after graduating high school, I initially looked into becoming a muralist. I started a page called 'Giraffe Murals' (which was later rebranded to this page, Leaman Exchange) and began promoting my work at local farmers' markets. It was during that time that I developed my artist mark. The legs of the giraffe make the M for Madison, and the back and neck make the s for Sharman.

A couple of weeks ago, I was going through some old sketchbooks and came across my initial designs (pictured below). I feel like this is one of the most important pieces of paper in my life, truly marking the beginning of my artistic career!

I'm hoping to get it framed in the future :)

Lots of grizzly activity rn.

Friends, neighbors, ranch guests & adventure seekers.

We thought we should let our neighborhood know that we have some bears wandering openly in the area.

Some beautiful black bears have been sighted here at the ranch, as well as we received a call from a gentleman camping at Chip Lake Park that there was a very large grizzly strolling through there last night.

Letโ€™s be bear aware ๐Ÿป ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

Just a heads up for anyone in our area. A grizzly went after our neighbours animals last night on rr111.

It is done!
So thankful to have been asked to do this project for the Edson Vet Clinic. They are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. I highlighted that on the ear tag of the cow (1974) and on the collar of the dog ('24). I also included a bunch of vet equipment hidden in the grass and some beneficial plants like arnica montana. Check it out on 2nd Ave in Edson on the east end of town!

Just a few details left, and this mural will be done!

It's starting to rain, so I'm wrapping it up today.
I'll be finishing up a couple more animals and adding some details tomorrow (hopefully, the weather doesn't look great tomorrow!)

Some more additions to the mural. Any guesses as to what other animals will be featured?

The wind is picking up and the rain is coming, so I'm wrapping up today!
You can check out the progress by driving by the Edson Vet Clinic on the east end of town on 2nd Ave.
I'm hoping to finish the bulk of the mural tomorrow!
