“Haate Khori” is a popular ritual for Bengalis and marks a child’s introduction to formal education. It is usually performed during Saraswati Puja and marks a major milestone for kids and known as the first writing ceremony.

The literal meaning of Haate Khori is “chalk in hand” and for the ceremony - people usually go to a nearby temple or Saraswati puja pandal or even arrange it in their homes, where the pandit performs the ceremony.

Ma Saraswati is the goddess of learning and education, hence performing Haate Khori on the Saraswati puja day holds a special significance. Usually, kids above 2 years of age are being readied by their parents with a new black chalkboard, chalks and books to enter the work of education ceremoniously holding the capable hands of the pandit. Kids are introduced to the world of letters and numbers and get to write their name for the first time in front of Goddess Saraswati and seek the deity’s blessing for the future.

Requesting all interested families to register for the pujo and specify during registration if you are interested in performing the Haate Khori for your child.
P.S. You will be requested to arrange for the chalkboard and chalks, as required for the ritual.

In 2022, few families got together to initiate Saraswati Puja in Basel with Covid restrictions. We welcomed Ma Saraswati with a lot of love and conducted Puja with great enthusiasm and devotion. We decided to pull in our friends too in the following year. So, last year in 2023, Saraswati Puja was performed at a much bigger scale with more than 100 devotees.
