The Phrontistery

The Phrontistery The Phrontistery was essentially a thinking place; a space to relax, create, connect...participate. Risqué in central Switzerland, I know.

THE EXPERIMENT
Born out of the desire to help individuals re-connect with themselves, the community and the world around them; The Phrontistery,['frɒntɪst(ə)ri] "a thinking place", offered an array of activities for all to enjoy. At the Hexenstiege base (The Witches Stairs) in Luzern, everyone was welcome...families, grandparents, singles, couples, acquaintances, friends and strangers alike...ever

yone was invited in and welcome to use the space to relax, to create, to play...But this was not defined in the window in any way. To discover the wonders available, one had to embrace uncertainty and take a step into the unknown. The Lounge was a small safe space away from home; it stored a selection of items for all to browse through and play with or even to purchase and enjoy at home. It was also a hub of warmth and gentle activity where one could occasionally find readings or intimate music shows. The Kitchen was a dynamic and ever changing space. People would craft, cook, work, knit, study, or just simply be...The Urban Grotto, was the gem of them all, located at the rear of the space, it was littered with soft lighting and raw qualities that provided the perfect setting for art exhibitions and for secret and intimate rendezvous. The space, the drinks and the snacks were all available on a self service basis, in return, the guests fed the little golden or bronze piggies that were around and even contributed to the Wasser Für Wasser collection pot, helping to support an additional good cause. REFLECTIONS
The Phrontistery ['frɒntɪst(ə)ri was and still is something of a wonder and mystery to many, but not all. Like in life, there can be much that awaits us when we step outside of our comfort zones and into a "new world". Those who dared to step through, without a personal connection to myself, Neda, or to the co-workers that came and went along the 5 year pathway, were the ones who gained the most, for they completely embraced the unknown! With no clear description in the window, other than an article, they took a leap of faith and walked through the first door. What awaited them was something like no other in Luzern, literally a home from home, with treasures to buy, drinks to enjoy - but no service - just a warm smile and a walking tour. This all took place in a public realm, in the heart of an area surrounded by apartments, cafés and restaurants. The surrounding community were mostly pleased with the colourful and playful essence of life that would emanate from the space and the beings that would come to play. Lessons learned from the first round of this game:

1. This sort of a project needs more hands than mine alone
2. A team would be required to allow it to truly grow
3. Membership, Membership, Membership fees - essential to support a self-sponsored scheme.

What’s this all about?

Tired of living amongst an isolated society? Want to be seen and to have the opportunity to see other people - regardless of their job titles, monthly salary - educational history, who they do or do not know? Do you want to play a part in the shaping of the town that we live in, create your own events - sell your artwork?

Then you’re at the right place at The Phrontistery. Come along, have a drink, a smoke, you may read a book, you may even cook. There are many events for you to come along to, and if you’re lucky - there’ll be someone there to open during the day too! In the meantime - come along to an event or host your own - feel welcome, feel open, feel at home.

There are Piggy Banks around that will take for the time and space that you consume - please do remember to feed them - they help to pay the rent and to keep the place lit up for you.
