DECOLONOIZE presents
✨OY (Avantpop, Electronica, Afrobeats)
with Nkech and MDT

24.10.2024 CONCERT | POETRY at

Decolonoize Berlin is inviting you to a night of poetry & music. Our goal as a collective is to create spaces that recognize and support BIPoC artists. We design spaces of mindfulness where we create a better world and promote meaningful exchange. As in every event of this year’s poetry and concert series, we open with powerful contributions from poets creating an atmosphere of reflection and empathy. It will be followed by the Duo OY’s danceable and colourful show — a celebration of diversity and full of positive energy.

Poets:
MDT
MDT’s writings of notions and poetry are deeply rooted in nature and indigenous heritage, reflecting the rich tapestry of an intertwined cultural background and intriguing travels.

Nkech
NKW, or Nkechukwu, is a multi-disciplinary writer, artist, curator- human hybrid.
“I am a storyteller first, inspired by patterns journeys, and the exploration of communal and self-identity within the human experience”

Band:
OY
The Berlin-based duo with roots in Ghana and Switzerland thrill audiences on stages around the world at festivals such as Eurockéenes in France, Rec Beat in Brazil, or clubs in downtown Cairo and New York. Singer/keyboardist Joy Frempong and producer/drummer Melodydreamer have been making music across all musical, linguistic and cultural boundaries for a decade. Therefore the title of their current album “World Wide We” came quite naturally. Polyglot negotiations of political and personal themes are musically woven into catchy songs. From Electronica Afrobeat Avant-Pop to Hip-Hop, Trap and Jazz - the music of OY is more versatile and unified, stylistically more open and independent than ever. “World Wide We” is an open invitation to dance all clichés into the ground at the duo’s acclaimed concerts.

We regret to inform you that Ebaa Monther’s performance this Thursday has been cancelled due to unexpected circumstances. In an email, Ebaa shared that after travelling to the Occupied Syrian Golan for family matters, she was informed that she could not return to Germany. Despite holding a valid permit, the occupation’s restrictions prevent her from crossing borders without a new visa, leaving her stuck.

Ebaa expressed her deep frustration and sent her sincere apologies.
We will collaborate in the future and help her to return as soon as possible. ❤️

We stand in solidarity with Ebaa and all those affected by the harsh realities of the occupation!

Were happy to announce that we found another artists to perform that night tho:

Enana .music is the Sumerian goddess of love, war, s*x and fertility Much like their name, Enana is a multi-dimensional artist. Enana is a trans non-binary Rapper, singer-songwriter, performer and activist whose artistic engine has always been fueled by their quest for freedom and social justice. In the last years they have been nurturing a unique sound that represents their intersectional existence being born in Damascus and based in Berlin since 2015.

We are very excited to have this little gem coming up for you this month! Spooky season is approaching and there’s no better way to celebrate than with some dark post punk by our beloved from the Netherlands! We had the pleasure to have them for our first Decolonoize Fest in 2022 and now we’re bringing them back for you 🖤

Lifeless Past from The Netherlands blends darkwave, postpunk, garage and goth-rock to create a unique dark musical landscape.
The band consists of Satori (guitars, drumbeats and vocals) together with Brandon on percussions. Both members are currently living in the Netherlands but they are born and raised on the island of Curaçao. Their cultural background can also be heard in their compositions and in some of their songs which are sung in Spanish. The band was founded in 2012 and they have a handfull of releases under their belt.
The group’s unparalleled approach to postpunk music is characterized by its steady and energetic drums, cascading melodic guitars, ta***ic basslines and bone chilling dark vocals.

Support is coming from the lovely who will make you dance with their Dark Wave/Dark Tech sounds! ✨

Raras Umaratih (they/them/dia), born and raised in Indonesia, is currently based in Berlin as a multimedia artist and organizer. To them, drawing is world-making within an image. Mutated and interconnected bodies – half life, half fiction – and words finding their power by coming to form, is much inspired by the tension in Raras’ experiences between the third world and the belly of the empire.

Christine (She/They) works as a graphic designer and illustrator.

In Christine’s illustrations you shall find a menagerie of fantastical creatures and q***r manga heroines, all woven into an artistic reality, which doesn’t take itself too seriously. Is this a form of escapism? Or a way of amplifying feelings and experiences? It is okay to be both as long as it spreads as stories to be seen and to make one feel seen.

Christine has started a fruitful collaboration with their partner and 3D-designer Emile Cerf (They/them) as they have been working on candle-making whimsical characters. They both bring their illustrations into the realm of the tangible, manifested in prints, ceramic work or sticker sheets.

Quang (they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist. Through video, text and performance they are interested in making the tensions between world histories and the self tangible. Drawing from q***rness as a mode of creating, imagining and rejecting, their works aim to illustrate the poetics in moments of insight, re-membrance, intimacy and incoherence.

Working solo and collaboratively, they have been featured at House of World Cultures, Oyoun, ausland.berlin, Museum of Visual Arts (Leipzig) and A.Farm (Ho Chi Minh City) and are currently playwriting about translation dilemmas rooted in the experience of Vietnamese German diaspora for the theater piece “Hörst du mich?” at Hoch-X (Munich), premiering in November ‘24.

They co-founded the arts & empowerment collective Spicy Ginkgo Collective () and Vietnamese poetry project tạt lon poetry (.lon.poetry).
