"Ve střižně se často vynoří věci, které člověku při natáčení nedojdou. Když jsem s Peterem Shafferem psal scénář k Amadeovi, dopodrobna jsem poznal Mozartovu hudbu a zamiloval se do ní, stejně jsem ji ale zcela nedocenil. Pravá hloubka jeho geniality mi došla až když jsem se dal do práce na svém dalším filmu – Valmontovi. Jeho děj se také odehrává v 18. století, a tak jsem během příprav poslouchal snad všechny Mozartovy současníky. Teprve tehdy jsem naplno pochopil jeho úžasnou velikost."

"Things often come up in the editing room that you don't notice while you're shooting. When I wrote the screenplay for Amadeus with Peter Shaffer, I became familiar with Mozart's music and fell in love with it, but I still didn't fully appreciate it. I realized the true depth of his genius when I started working on my next film, Valmont. It is also set in the 18th century, so I listened to almost all of Mozart's contemporaries during pre-production. It was only then that I fully grasped his astonishing greatness."
