Tonight marks the opening of Haus der Kulturen der Welt’s 'Sonic Pluriverse Festival: Bass Cultures' — an eclectic program of concerts, DJ sets, lectures, poetry readings and film installations exploring sound system culture as a global phenomenon.

The festival begins with a keynote lecture by legendary author, musician and activist Linton Kwesi Johnson, followed by a live performance from roots reggae icon Queen Omega & The Royal Souls and concludes with a DJ set by Croatian reggae experts Roots Daughters.

The opening weekend continues on Saturday with André Marie Tala & The Tchamassi Band, Les Mamans du Congo & Rrobin and more.

The Space Lady is known for her kitschy keyboard-with-built-in-drum-machine sound and her enigmatic performances. Whether performing her own songs or covers, seeing the cult musician live is a charming and infectiously joyful experience. Her playful, straightforward and low-tech sound has made The Space Lady a beloved performer for adventurous audiences.

Tomorrow evening, alongside sound artist FUJI||||||||||TA, she brings Kiezsalon x DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam to a close.

Japanese sound artist FUJI|||||||||||TA's practice utilises various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and noises. Collaborating with artists including Akio Suzuki, Keiji Haino and Koichi Makigami, Fujita has "become a master of his craft”, as put by The Wire.

This Thursday, 26 June, the FUJI|||||||||||TA will play our final Kiezsalon at DAS MINSK in Potsdam, along with The Space Lady and DJ Natalia Escobar.

Long celebrated and mythologised for her heavenly Casio-busking on the streets of San Francisco and Boston, The Space Lady is now regarded as a synth pop legend and an outsider artist, transmitting messages of peace and harmony globally.

Next Thursday, 26 June, she graces the stage at Kiezsalon x DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam, along with Japanese sound artist FUJI||||||||||TA and music selector Natalia Escobar.

Sound artist FUJI||||||||||TA is renowned for his innovative hand-built pipe organ. Crafted in 2009, the instrument was designed to create sonic landscapes rather than traditional melodies. His work draws inspiration from gagaku, the traditional Japanese court music established around the 10th century.

He will play with his custom-built instrument at Kiezsalon x DAS MINSK next Thursday, 26 June. Playing alongside synth-pop legend The Space Lady and selector Natalia Escobar.

We are looking forward to welcoming NikNak to DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam tonight, after her show at the last MADEIRADIG.

She joins us at Kiezsalon as our selector, weaving in music before, after and between Atsuko Hatano and Danae Palaka.

The musical polymath has carved out a niche in contemporary music through her distinctive approach to turntablism. On her latest album, Ireti, “darkness churns within glossy beats... the anxiety of dystopia looms, and NikNak captures it and sends it out in mysterious waves,” writes The Quietus.

“Just as our perception of rhythm shifts depending on which beat we emphasise, our understanding of history and social dynamics is shaped by the perspectives we choose to focus on.”

Tokyo-based string player Atsuko Hatano is a composer, music arranger and performer. She plays the five-string viola, violin and cello, and constructs innovative compositions of multi-layered electronica. We're happy to welcome her to Potsdam following her mesmerising show at the Musikbrauerei last year.

Atsuko Hatano plays at our Kiezsalon in DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam this Thursday, 19 June. She's joined by solo drummer Danae Palaka and music selector NikNak.
