The Rural Rebels of Titmaringhausen in Sauerland are leading a bottom-up shift to a CO2-neutral lifestyle, cutting energy costs by over 50% and eliminating heating emissions. Together with Christoph Hesse’s architectural projects, presented under the theme "Resourceful Pioneering", they inspire others to follow their example. In Korbach, a green oasis fosters self-efficacy and ecological community projects, showcasing the power of collective transformation.

"Resourceful Pioneering" is one of five thematic fields in the exhibition.

Instead of exploiting resources to the point of depletion, "Regenerative Harvesting" by Christoph Hesse Architects champions a method that mirrors nature's cycles. Think of it as preserving the meadow by taking only what can regrow, ensuring its long-term vitality. This principle challenges the extractive, wasteful systems dominating our world today, offering a vision of balance and renewal.

“Regenerative Harvesting” is one of five thematic fields in the exhibition.

AWARD | Kristin Feireiss receives the Fritz Schumacher Prize 2024

This year's for urban design and building culture goes to the architectural curator and founder of Aedes for her commitment to building culture. Hamburg's Senator for Urban Development and Housing, Karen Pein, presented the award from the Hamburg Senate today together with Chief Building Director Franz-Josef Höing. The laudatory speech for Kristin Feireiss was given by board member and architect Peter St John from London.

The Fritz Schumacher Prize is given by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg every three to five years to honour the outstanding importance of the former Chief Building Director Fritz Schumacher (1869–1947) for Hamburg's building culture and urban development. Kristin Feireiss is the first female award winner since the Hamburg Senate took over the award again in 2007.

In addition to the award for Kristin Feireiss, three awards were also given to young talents. Aedes would like to congratulate the young award winners Lea Hartmeyer, Thomas Lesch and Patrick Schneider.

TALK: Sandra Schuster.

Our Story

The Architecture Forum Aedes has become one of the most successful institutions internationally for communicating architectural culture, urban design and similar topics. Aedes strives to focus public attention on the cultures of building and architecture and to present and convey architectural visions, sustainable urban concepts, urban planning and landscape architecture. In more than 350 exhibitions and catalogues in the typical Aedes format, renowned architects and current Pritzker-Award winners such as Zaha Hadid, Thom Mayne, Daniel Libeskind, Frank Gehry or Rem Koolhaas presented their work long before acquiring world fame. In addition to 10 to 16 exhibitions per year, the dialog with outside experts and an interested public is supported by simultaneous symposia, series of lectures and discussions. Aedes was founded in 1980 by Kristin Feireiss and Helga Retzer († 1984) in Berlin-Charlottenburg as the first private architecture gallery in Europe. In memoriam Kongresshalle Berlin was the title of the opening exhibition, which became a groundbreaking success. As one of its kind Aedes served as a prototypical model for many architecture-museums and similar institutions established later. In 1985 the architecture forum Aedes West moved to the S-Bahn vaults at Savignyplatz. In 1995, under the name of Aedes East, another branch was opened in Hackesche Höfe in Berlin-Mitte by Kristin Feireiss together with her partner Hans-Jürgen Commerell. In June 2006 Aedes moved to Pfefferberg, the grounds of a former brewery in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg.
