Berlin Atonal returns to Kraftwerk Berlin this summer with its traditional 5-day format. The festival continues its commitment to presenting cutting-edge performances, audiovisual works, and site-specific projects at the intersection of experimental sound and contemporary art. Expanding across Kraftwerk’s vast architectural spaces, this coming year’s edition builds on its legacy of bold curation and pioneering artistic encounters. Further details, including program announcements and ticketing information, will follow in the coming months.

Pre-registration is now available. Pre-registering grants you 24-hour early access to purchase a festival pass before general sales open on April 02. You’ll receive an email with an early access ticket link on April 01. Pre-registration does not guarantee a pass, nor does it require you to buy one. Any remaining festival passes will be available to the general public from April 02.

Following a transcendary three act journey through the immaterial musical legacy of the late Doudou N’diaye Rose with Family N’diaye Rose, Lamin Fofana, LABOUR, Nkisi, and Holy Tongue meets Shackleton, we move into OPENLESS 3: The Clearing, tonight.⁠

The Clearing offers a profound auditory journey harking back to renowned formats like The Long Now or previous Berlin Atonal nights that utilise the vast Kraftwerk interior for deeply engaging and transformative musical experiences. Each concert reconfigures the space into a dynamic canvas for sonic exploration and creativity. Demdike Stare’s unveil their newest project Baselines – an audio-visual journey into the bastard children of tape culture. A new collaboration unites the multi-disciplinary artists Kelman Duran and Franziska Aigner for the first time, while Grand River teams up with Abul Mogard to present their transformative new live show. The same night Sara Persico and Mika Oki premiere a new work entitled Sphaîra and cult Australian act CS + Kreme perform their own kind of ‘horizontal’ music while poet-musicians Canzonieri invite Lara Damaso and Lord Spikeheart to join them for a one-off live show.⁠

Berlin Atonal OPENLESS 1: The Less Deceived Recap – Thank you to everyone that joined us at Kraftwerk Berlin for Day 1 of our one-off concept OPENLESS. The opening night featured debut works merging music and sound design, research and journalism, art and site-specific performance with, Chris Watson and Izabela Dłużyk, Saint Abdullah, Eomac and Rebecca Salvadori, Forensis (Forensic Architecture) in collaboration with PAN / Bill Kouligas, and Lord Spikeheart.⁠

Transcriptions starts tonight at 19:00. Doors open at 18:00. It’s a multisensory journey through the immaterial musical legacy of the late, great Doudou N’diaye Rose in three acts. Participating artists in the performance are Birame N’diaye Rose, Molamine N’diaye Rose, Wadane N’diaye Rose, Buoyo N’diaye, Yoro M’baye, Berlin based Studio LABOUR, sonic alchemist Nkisi (who delves into her personal connection with Cheikh Anta Diop’s proto-Afrofuturist legacy through the lens of Doudou N’Diaye Rose’s 1992 composition named after the Pan-African scientist), New York based musician and artist Lamin Fofana (premiering a brand new live show), videographer Hiroo Tanaka as well as Holy Tongue performing with Shackleton live for the first time. ⁠

OPENLESS 3: SUNDAY 25 AUGUST⁠

Canzonieri is a multimedia project by artist Emiliano Maggi and musician Cosimo Damiano. As two fifths of the renowned group Salò they maintain the larger group’s demented enthusiasm for noise music, oneiric atmospheres and baroque costumes, whilst channeling the sound in a more aleatory and lysergic-folkish dimension. They often use self-built or customised instruments, which vary based on the venue and circumstances. Appearing for this special one-off show like characters in a dream are Kenyan maverick Lord Spikeheart and artist/choreographer/spirit-guide Lara Dâmaso. This performative apparition is curated together with Kuboraum.⁠

Cult Australian act CS + Kreme transcend traditional genres with a heavily processed post-punk kind of chamber music. For the operatic final night of OPENLESS - an expansive Sunday night reverie featuring Kelman Duran, Demdike Stare, Sara Persico, Grand River and Abul Mogard among others - they perform their meditative “horizontal music” which happily swells in and out of active and hallucinatory listening.⁠

Kenyan maverick Lord Spikeheart weaves in and out of the OPENLESS weekend program. He first appears as part of the the Friday concert night 'The Less Deceived' alongside the new work from Forensis (Forensic Architecture) and Bill Kouligas. In this solo performance he sings, raps and screams with a noisy, frenetic style over drumlines that pulse like a massive heart. He returns again for the Sunday program in a special show with rabble rousers Canzonieri and Lara Dâmaso. Berlin Atonal invites Spikeheart to split atoms with sound and tear the Kraftwerk.

OPENLESS is the newest project from Berlin Atonal comprising site-specific concert experiences and club nights across August 23, 24 and 25 this year. The iconic Kraftwerk space will be activated for three very highly curated and unique performance nights. Each night unfolds operatically around a thematic core, combining some of the world’s most exciting musical and visual artists.⁠

The last remaining Weekend Passes, allowing unrestricted access to all events hosted as part of the OPENLESS program over 23 24 25 August, are still available to purchase.⁠

Berlin Atonal 2023

The Berlin Atonal 2023 commissioned new collaboration between Pavel Milyakov and Perila – entitled pmxper – unfolded as an immersive extended performance on the ground floor of the Kraftwerk building. They presented a special live set that explored the threshold between being outside and inside of an ongoing performance, softly shifting the gap between listeners and the sound-makers.
