🌏 The latest market report from the British Council & Study Portals has shown that international students are increasingly favouring Asia as a study destination.

📈 Student demand is driven by factors including affordability, the growing number of English-taught programmes, and strong graduate outcomes.

🥇 Asia now has more institutions in the QS world university rankings than any other region, while the growing number of Western university branch campuses is adding to the region’s pull.

🇺🇸 The current US administration has announced its intention to change or possibly even cancel the Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme.

🛑 More than half of all international graduates use the programme and it has proven particularly popular with STEM graduates.

💵 With action highly likely, a new analysis shows that changes to the programme could cost the US up to US$481 billion per year.

🇨🇦 Following the recent announcement that Canada would be halving the number of study permit applications it would accept in 2026, exemptions for master’s and doctoral candidates have been unveiled.

🎓 Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have issued new guidance stating that study permit applications for doctoral candidates will be expedited. This will also apply to accompanying family members providing they apply at the same time.

🇨🇦 The Canadian government has just announced its new foreign enrolment cap levels for the next three years.

With foreign enrolment levels already well below the number allowed under the current cap, the new limit set for 2026 will be just 155,000 new study permits - a 50% reduction on the original projections.

With student interest declining and more stringent controls already in place, recent analysis from ApplyBoard suggests that Canada will approve just 80,000 new study permits across 2025, the lowest number in a decade and far below the current cap of 316,276.
