Gbenga Adeboye is the Father of StandUp comedy in Nigeria, not Ali Baba. Before Alibaba started, Gbenga has sold out stadium shows, both home and abroad, says James Ogunjimi....

In his words:

Been following the conversation on X about who the father of standup comedy in Nigeria is between Gbenga Adeboye and Alibaba and it's annoying to me.

The dumbest argument I've seen against Gbenga Adeboye from the popularity angle is "how many people knew him outside the South West?"

Adeboye started in the early 80s. The likelihood that those arguing against his popularity would know him then is low, not to talk about the likelihood of a mostly Yoruba comedian being popular with non-Yoruba speakers.

Also, it's not about if you knew him, the point of contention is who was first to do it and it's Adeboye.

Alibaba shouldn't even be in the same conversation on this alongside Adeboye. It's all shades of disrespectful.

Alibaba was still an executive assistant to entertainment and political icon, Dapo Adelegan somewhere in Lagos around the time Gbenga Adeboye had his US comedy tour, "American Exposure" in 1991.

Adeboye did it all: radio, TV, standup, storytelling, character acting, poetry, skits. He did it all and was already known home and abroad before Alibaba ever got into the game.

I should say though that while Adeboye could be credited as the father of standup comedy in Nigeria, he's not the father of comedy as a whole in Nigeria.

Baba Sala probably holds that title. He was there before even Gbenga Adeboye. Even in the early 90s, Baba Sala and co already had their records and skits on those big CD disks.

I'm saying, talented, yes, but Alibaba should not be put in the same conversation as Gbenga Adeboye. Adeboye is not his mate. He is his mentors' mentor.

Hmmmmn 🤔
To me, Ali Baba dare not compare himself to Gbenga ADEBOYE, he's a learner where Abefe is. When you talk of the king of comedy, give it to Alhaji Pastor Oluwo.

FROM QUEEN NAOMI’S SISTER: All my sister did was trying to put smiles on children’s faces which she has been doing for years. Unfortunately, this year didn’t go as planned. I feel sorry for the children that lost their lives. My sister was arrested and detained for more than six days. She collapsed on the third day when she was being interrogated by the DSS and she was rushed to the hospital. Yesterday she appeared in court and the judgement was for her to be remanded. One of the counts against her was mu*der. As at yesterday her BP was very high. They took her phones and did not allow any family member to see her. I had to beg for her son to be allowed to see her. She wasn’t supposed to appear in a magistrate court but an high court. Everyone is saying it’s a bailable offence but the law is saying otherwise. They treated her like a terror!st yesterday. Over 40 policemen surrounded her. Only my brother and mum were allowed to sit in court......

FROM ALHAJI ORIYOMI: I went home nak€d yesterday with only my boxers. If not that they seized some people’s phones, my pictures would have been flying on the internet. I wept like a baby when I saw how people were falling on one another. As I was rescuing those that fell, more people were rushing and stepping on those that were on the ground because of small gifts. I pity Naomi and I pity myself. I will never do this again. The reason why I always collect money for my own children’s carnival is to regulate the crowd. People are greedy and selfish when it comes to free things. We invited kids, it was adults that showed up especially old people. Some people even came with two months old babies. We had to be looking for their mothers yesterday
