Jewish Remembrance Week Görlitz/Zgorzelec

Jewish Remembrance Week Görlitz/Zgorzelec Honoring the legacy. Finding hope in our history. Mourning the loss. Between 1847 and 1930s, the Görlitz Jewish community thrived and prospered.

About the week...
Jews first arrived in Görlitz nearly a thousand years ago but were persecuted, murdered or forced to flee during two periods of settlement. After being expelled from Görlitz in 1396, Jews were banned from living there again until 1847. Then, in 1933 life for Jews in Görlitz became perilous. By 1940, this Jewish community was no more; all had either fled or were murdered as a resu

lt of Nazi atrocities. The events taking place June 19-25, 2023, will celebrate the vibrant former Jewish community of Görlitz, highlighting the accomplishments of members, their businesses, their families and synagogue as well as the horrific persecution meted out during the Nazi era. Descendants of this former Jewish community will be communing in Görlitz from all over the world for the second official Jewish Remembrance Week Görlitz/Zgorzelec. The programs will shine a light on the lives of those who survived as refugees to other lands and will feature world-renowned experts on the subject. The Jewish Week of Remembrance Görlitz 2023 will include talks by survivors and their children, lectures by renowned historians, artistic events, photo exhibits and discussions all with an eye to carrying the lessons of this legacy forward to offer hope and humanity to the many humanitarian crises we face today.

Liebe Freunde,

Can't be in Görlitz tonight for our first event? It is being professionally live streamed 🙂

World War II caused massive change across the globe. No international community was affected as much as the Jews.
What was life like for these former Görlitzers in their new homelands?
This is what we aim to discuss on this special evening, in conversation with visiting Jewish Görlitz descendants and other voices about this subject.

Check it out on youtube:

Before we got started with our very busy work day in the Jewish Cemetery, 31 students and our 7 adults participating in Project Mitzvah had the opportunity to spend the entire day with Rabbi Esther Jonas-Maertin on Tuesday.

The students got to learn first hand about Jewish burial rituals, about the beautiful symbols you might not first notice in a Jewish cemetery, and even a little bit of Hebrew!

We are so grateful that Rabbi Esther Jonas-Maertin is the official spiritual advisor for Jewish Remembrance Week Görlitz/Zgorzelec and that she even came a bit early to Görlitz to help make an incredible experience for our Project Mitzvah students.

Project Mitzvah is in full swing as we are about to begin Day #2 with the fantastic Rabbi Esther Jonas-Maertin!

Check out these photos from our offical JRW photographer and friend, Matthias Wehnert from the first day yesterday. We went for a 2 hour walk through Jewish Görlitz (from the middle ages up until today) with Michal Peri, the daughter of Görlitz Holocaust survivor, Reuven Peri.

Bring on Day #2!

The Butterfly Project Landkreis Görlitz/Zgorzelec #3 is in the books! The amazing 6th grade students (almost 70 of them) at Augustum Annen Gymnasium took my breath away several times. I got to hear a little girl recite Rita Herbst’s story and I got tears in my eyes.

Names. Stories. All of the Jewish kids who lived in Goerlitz being remembered by the youth who live here today. Three pieces of our Landkreis Görlitz/Zgorzelec Butterfly Project finished! 3 more to go!

On this day, exactly 90 years ago something historic and horrible happened right outside my front door. For reference, this event happened more than five years before the Reichs Kristallnacht Pogrom of November 9, 1938.

What happened in Görlitz on March 29, 1933, made the news in international newspapers around the world. Yet we don’t even have a full list of names for the 37 Jewish men arrested and humiliatingly paraded through the streets of Görlitz on that day….

Join me for a closer look into what happened on this day 90 years ago, and stop to pause to have a think if you are walking through Postplatz today.

A huge shout out to all of the Görlitz Jewish descendants that made the research into this article possible.
