AWAL / BEGINNING [DOCUMENTATION / EXCERPT]
A PERFORMANCE INSTALLATION OF DANCE WITH LIVE MUSIC ABOUT STARTING OVER AND CONTINUING ON
How can we regain hope in the face of personal loss and existential threat? Where do we find new sources of joy and promise for the future? We fall down and pick ourselves back up over and over again. What is this perpetual motion that drives us ever forward? rubarb dance & art explores these questions through dance, music, and visual art, drawing inspiration from traditional Indonesian music and dance. Working in international collaboration, the ensemble transforms the House of Indonesian Cultures in Berlin into a laboratory of synergies in which visual and sensory experiences overlap. The performance installation unfolds within diverse spaces, opening up new perspectives and auditory experiences.
A Phantasmagoric Gamelan Frenzy / Richard Pettifer
In “AWAL / BEGINNING” created by choreographer Ruben Reniers and collaborators at the Rumah Budaya Indonesia Berlin, an explosion of performative pedagogy blends traditional and contemporary choreography in a phantasmagoric performance event taking place over three days from 16 to 18 December 2022.
The space is pushed and shoved around, things occur in slow motion and fast forward – and moments begin to gather power and swirl, as dissonance becomes unison, and technique gives way to informality. It’s a triumph of collaboration and resourcefulness from an assembly of artists who seem at the peak of their powers, given the space to breathe and exchange. The result is infectious and marvellous, blending intimacy and precision in a kind of transformative conversation, shared in glimpses over an epic, 2-hour evening.

TOUR: REQUIEM | MANGONGKAL HOLI
a musical dance performance with moving images by @rubarb_dance_and_art_
“In deeply moving solos, they give heartfelt expression to their pain and their losses— sometimes with an intensity that calls to mind German expressionist dance. But even these echoes have their justification in this sensitively balanced, soothingly beautiful, inventive long work. At its end, one is left with the sense of having experienced a healing, unifying ritual, an art event that draws its strength for the future from reformulating the commonality of all human existence”.

Film Screening
Road To REQUIEM | MANGONGKAL HOLI
by Marco Baass
at Haus der Indonesischen Kulturen - Rumah Budaya Indonesia - Berlin
Sunday 07. August 18:00 | Free Admission.
In 2021, rehearsals for Mangongkal Holi took place. For one summer, dancers, musicians, costume designers, stage and lighting designers came together under the artistic direction of Ruben Reniers to create a dance performance.
The result was an intercultural work that explores the themes of death and mourning, as well as life and joy, from a Western perspective and, in contrast, from an Indonesian one. This process was accompanied by Marco Baaß with the camera. In short interviews, the participants describe how they personally dealt with the topic and how they developed their own approach. But the film also describes how different artists have found together and in their joint creative process to a creative family.

REQUIEM | MANGONKAL HOLI
a musical dance performance with moving images by Ruben Reniers / rubarb dance & art
It is the confrontation with the two natural forces of our existence, birth and death, which is placed in the center of this musical dance performance. Based on the collision of two very personal events, the death of his father and the birth of his daughter, dancer and choreographer Ruben Reniers focuses in his current artistic work on phenomena related to death.
As a native Indonesian who grew up in the Netherlands, he is interested in Indonesian as well as European funeral rituals and farewell ceremonies – and how the different concepts of connecting the living and the dead are manifested in the dances, movements, touches and voices of those who mourn. Together with an international team of dancers, musicians and a drawing artist, he embarks on a quest to artistically bring together the different approaches of these cultures and of each one of us.

Too tall, too small, too fat, too thin, too light, too dark, too poor, too rich, too square, too hip, too turned in, too turned out, too twisted or too wound up – do you also feel every now and then at the wrong place, in the wrong time, in the wrong body or even all at once? in-place/displace/ replace, a dance piece by Ruben Reniers, deals with this phenomenon, with a focus on physical enrollmentand its changeability. How far can, will or should one bend to adapt to one’s environment? Who determines what is appropriate and inappropriate? And does the individual authenticity perhaps fall by the wayside with all such ad- justments?
