Rasmus Vels is a Danish DJ and Producer from the northern part of Denmark, with a love for the deeper and progressive sounds of House and Techno. He has been a part of the electronic scene for the last 9 years and since then, been a part of the Aalborg electronic scene as a resident DJ at Vesterå and as a part of Frekvens. Rasmus Vels productions are melodic and organic tracks that seek to move you through different states of mind. The same goes for his DJ sets, where you are taken on a melodic journey to move your body and soul.

Paula is an Island girl from Estonia. She has been in the music scene for the past 9 years and has experimented in many genres - from drum&bass to dubstep to techno. She is now deeply in love with afro house, deep progressive house, and melodic techno music, which she channels as a reflection of her inner universe. PAULA is internationally acclaimed, jumping all over as the resident Dj of the infamous island underground club Piidivabrik, as founder of party series Bokamoso & organizer of I Land Sound, an island festival held on an islet in her hometown.
PAULA is currently active in the contemporary music scene as a board member of North Electronic Music Alliance (NEMA), a driving force behind the electronic music event series Oh My, and as organizer of cultural event platform The Undergrowth 🌼

Ætervader works to create everything from sharp electronic/industrial noises to tender and attentive soft textures, focusing on topics such as body image and euphoria.

They mainly express themselves through improvisation and generative music; a course of action that allows a certain level of freedom and awareness, making each of Ætervaders performances stand out as it’s own experience.

Due to a sudden change, Ætervader is taking over for Christian Loving. Expect nothing less than the best, as Ætervader graces the Undergrowth stage for the first time.

Yek is a legendary house music connoisseur based in Aalborg - he slings vinyls and is one of the best selectors we have the pleasure of knowing. He was previously a resident DJ of Dinamo FM, Istanbuls premier indie dance and electronic music radio station, and we're blessed to be hosting him for the first time.

Due to a sudden change, Yek is taking over for Chris Power. Expect to hear a fusion of disco rooted raw Detroit house cuts and deep dubbly beats.

UNDERGROWTH FESTIVAL PRESENTS: RIKKE BOGETOFT 💛

Rikke Bogetoft is a q***rfeminist conceptual artist based in Aalborg. Her practice centers around intersectional feminist activism, interdisciplinary performance art & interventionist practice.

Rikke utilizes conceptual, interventionist & transdisciplinary practices to tackle political & socio-economic issues regarding the relationship between body and power. The borders between backstage & frontstage intertwine & overlap, questioning the binary understanding of performance vs reality - Rikke exploits these moments of not-not-reality to examine the understanding of self within interpersonal contexts, largely inspired by their own journey as a q***r neurodiverse femme.

Rikke is our resident moderator and organizer behind The Undergrowth - this time she’s kickstarting the festival alongside co-organizer Paula Uspenski with an opening performance, toying with their own version of a welcome speech.

UNDERGROWTH FESTIVAL PRESENTS: E-JAM 💛

E-jam is a subdivision of NEMA, focusing on artistic expression through music, creating a safe space for people with all levels of experience with composition of electronic music to pursue creative discourses within different creative frames given for each session. The jams are organized in a rhizomatic manner, with each day session being a challenge and topic in itself. The red thread of the jams is the act of creating spontaneous moments for the sake of experimenting with electronic music. The jams are open to anyone willing to bring their curiosity and to experiment.

E-jam is an electronic jam collective, composed of electronic music producers from Northern Jutland. We are delighted to be hosting E-jam’s first public performance and hope you will give a warm welcome to this up and coming collaboration.

No festival posts today. Today we grieve the victims affected by the despicable shooting that occurred in Oslo last night. The gay bar “London” was targeted as Norway celebrated their 50 year mark for decriminalization of homosexuality.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the victims and their families and friends affected by this tragedy.

HAPPY PRIDE! 🌸🌼

We are now 1 week away from UNDERGROWTH FESTIVAL, and we’d like to take the time to reminisce on our recent Pride-Warm-Up-Event with local dj’s Monapink & Paula

Pride month is a time to celebrate love, to remember the people who have fought for the q***r cause and to keep the fight going. Since the beginning of the pandemic many lgbtq+ individuals have experienced a rise in discrimination from institutions and hate groups all over the world, and in Denmark we’ve seen the rise of support for Dansk Regnbueråd, an association in opposition of LGBT+ Danmark with a manifesto against “wokeness” and genderactivism. We at The Undergrowth do not support the values, ideology or actions of Dansk Regnbueråd. We are honoured to be working with many q***r artists, musicians & cultural workers all year round, and we stand beside them in the fight for equality. We strive to support our q***r communities through art & dialogue, and hope you will join us in celebrating the q***r undergrowth of Aalborg.

Papa Guincho plays across the board, serving up a melting pot of dub, techno, house, UK, bass, indie dance electronica and plenty of goodies that don’t fit into any category! By selecting music from all across the board it's possible to have a listen or a dance on a truly unique journey through music. Papa Guincho is delivering a kaleidoscopic technique of mixing that gives countless unforgettable moments to people from different musical persuasions. Purely for your aural pleasure, obscure but quality underground dance music.

Papa Guincho, with roots from Latvia, is one of the finest and most experienced selectors in Aalborg's underground music scene. The Undergrowth has previously hosted him solo, and he’s now returning as 1/2 of the Baltic Boyz duo that emerges for one night only.

UNDERGROWTH FESTIVAL PRESENTS: RASPEL 💛

Rasmus Raspel (EST/DK) - an Estonian guy living deep undercover in Denmark with a Danish name - has turned k***s and bobbed heads for 6 years. He plays variations of house and other electronic music characterized by bouncy, uplifting energy that includes melodic basslines and a fair amount of vocals. His inspiration comes from techno, house, tech house, bass house, UK garage, UK rap and hip-hop, funk and soul, and even rock and metal music. Being the melomaniac that he is, it's difficult to confine him to just one specific genre, as he is constantly searching for new musical adventures. His philosophy around DJing is, first and foremost, to play for himself and have fun and, in the process, to project that fun to the audience through dance.

Rasmus has played all over Denmark, and previously DJ'ed at the very first Undergrowth event. We are excited to host him again, this time with collaborator and fellow DJ Papa Guincho - Rasmus and Guincho are: the Baltic Boyz

UNDERGROWTH FESTIVAL PRESENTS: IZEMZ BAND 💛

IZEMZ BAND is a fusion of traditional Afro-Brazilian ritualistic practice and electronic dance music - a way of bridging the past and the future - where the primal meets the modern and they dance together - for a better sense of presence and togetherness: a ritual - designed for empathic relationship and pleasure.

IZEMZ BAND are Jens Bugay-Hougaard (DK/UK) and Sandro Masai (BR/DK)

This is the first time The Undergrowth is hosting IZEMZ BAND - their ritual concert experience manifests a new space for presence and togetherness, and blends audio and visual aesthetics. IZEMZ BAND are rightfully closing the festival programme, ensuring a grand finale.

UNDERGROWTH FESTIVAL PRESENTS: SIYANA RAYKOVSKA 💛

Siyana Raykovska is a Bulgarian textile, installation and performance artist. Her artistic work is conceptual and often focused on investigating social issues through an art-based research methodology.

Siyana has been involved with the art scene in Aalborg for many years, both as an artist, curator and project organizer - while studying Art & Technology at Aalborg University she curated contemporary art exhibitions for Aalborg Surreal & Art Room 1000fryd, and expanded her practice in international contexts. Siyana is a member of AAAA, Aalborg Artist Association, and previously spoke about the treatment of artists in Denmark and Aalborg in our panel talk during UNDERGROWTH X KULTURMØDET. This time, Siyana is exhibiting a textile installation inspired by the undergrowth of the forest, and we are honored to be hosting her new work.

UNDERGROWTH FESTIVAL PRESENTS: JESPER THIEMER 💛

Jesper Thiemer is an installation artist working with technology as an aesthetic. He is currently focusing on installations that investigate spatiality and converse with its surroundings, looking to remediate the unknown into another media space in order to reposition it in new ways, opening up to new perception.

Data and technology are everywhere and can be put into any context. The messages and politics of technology are what generate the most curiosity unto what is possible in the boundaries between art, philosophy and technology. The span of interaction between human and technology is vast and will be explored through different technologies utilizing technical subjects such as programming, sound, light and motors, altering people’s perception of technology as well as letting the technology learn the languages of humans and nature. Jesper previously performed at The Undergrowth in collaboration with Matias Gaarde, and we are delighted to see him return to exhibit his solo-work.

UNDERGROWTH FESTIVAL PRESENTS: CHRISTIAN LOVING 💛

Christian Loving is an experienced musician, but new to the electronic music scene. He is a former bassist and drummer, and has since 2020 found his way into making music with synthesizers, drum machines, ableton and other fun sound gadgets. He is currently experimenting with a laptop-free setup, where the sonic starting point is improvised monotonous music with some beat to it.

Improvisation is a big part of the way Christian wants to share and express a sound space with others. There is no precise musical plan, other than some kick drum (125 bpmish) and something around that. The current setup is a hybrid of sounds recorded in the studio and a little Roland SH-01A synthesizer. All techniques and sounds are controlled by an Akai Force and Allen Heath K2 midi controllers. Christian is excited to experience how this new setup will work and how the merging of these sounds are going to unfold - he previously performed at the very first Undergrowth event, and we can’t wait to experience his sound entirely anew.
