SHAKTU is a new event brand and collective based in Copenhagen that was born with the purpose of making female artists visible within the underground electronic music scene.
We see a slow but steady rise in female acts in electronic music festivals over the past decade. Research and data reveal a rise in the proportion of female acts from 9.2% in 2012 to 26.9% in 2020–2021. (FACTS 2022).
However, despite all the efforts that are being made, the data is loud and clear- the marginalization of women in the electronic music community in media image, earnings, and overall global demand does not live up to the inclusivity-focused marketing of electronic music.
The electronic music community is supposed to be a place where all groups of people and all walks of life can coexist in the spaces between the layered melodies and ceaseless baselines of the genre – women are vital to this definition.
Our focus with this new concept is not just about simple representation or inclusion; it enables us to confront, expose, and challenge the structural conditions and biases that underwrite our culture.
