Obituary: Remembering the Life and Legacy of my Grandfather Paul Waldo McKenzie.

“In the path of righteousness, there is life; and in its pathway, there is no death” (Proverbs 12:28). These words encapsulate the essence of Paul Waldo McKenzie, affectionately known as Papa, Fada, and Ole`Mack, who graced this world with his presence on August 3, 1918, in Ludlow, Crofts Hill Clarendon, Jamaica. Born to John and Margaret McKenzie (nee: de Bair), Paul was the eighth child among his siblings: Luther, John, Louise, Rose, Jane, Estella, Nora, and Alice.

Paul’s journey through life was one of resilience and hard work. After completing his education at Crofts Hill, he delved into the field of mechanics, laying the foundation for a career marked by dedication and skill. In 1940, he ventured to Panama for work, returning two years later to his beloved Jamaica. His career path led him to British West Indies Airways (BWIA) from approximately 1950 to 1961 before transitioning to a fruitful tenure with Grace Kennedy as an independent contractor for nearly three decades.

In June 1945, Paul embarked on a new chapter as he married Ivy Service, with whom he shared the joys and challenges of raising a family. Together, they welcomed eight daughters: Nola, Junie, Margaret, Brenda, Baby Mck, Maureen (affectionately known as Pinkey), Pauline (Polly), and Valerie. Their union also saw the arrival of Jennifer in 1957. Though Paul and Ivy parted ways in 1974, Paul found love again with Millicent Davis, tying the knot in July 1975 and welcoming five more children into their lives: Beverley, Sturland, Barrington, Lloyd, and Ian.

In 1985, Paul made the bold decision to relocate to the United States, joining Millicent in Boston, Massachusetts. Despite the allure of a new beginning, Paul found himself yearning for the warmth of his homeland, leading to years of commuting between Boston and Jamaica. Amidst life’s transitions, Paul faced loss with the passing of Millicent in August 1999. He later returned to Jamaica briefly before his children lovingly encouraged his relocation to the U.S., where they could provide closer care.

Paul’s later years were a testament to the love and bond he shared with his family. He traveled between Massachusetts, Georgia, and Florida, cherishing precious moments with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. On March 15, 2014, surrounded by his devoted daughters Margaret, Jennifer, son Sturland, and daughter-in-law Merle, Paul peacefully departed this world to be with his Lord and Savior.

Throughout his life, Paul was characterized by his quiet strength, humility, and unwavering integrity. He was a man of few words but immense wisdom, always extending a helping hand to those in need. Though stubborn in his ways, he exemplified diligence and grace, embodying values of honesty and decency.

Paul leaves behind a cherished legacy, survived by his sisters Nora and Alice, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchild, extended family, and a multitude of friends. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, as he continues to inspire with his enduring spirit and legacy of love.

The Epiphany of Charles the Bold,
Duke of Burgundy
In this post we will see and understand the real depiction of Charles the Bold in a contemporary work from the 15th century Netherlands. We will also understand how the Epiphany, or Adoration of the Magi, scenes are the key to revealing the true rulers of Europe.

The piece above is triptych, or three paneled painting or relief. It was created by Hans Memling between 1470 and 1480. It depicts an Adoration of the Magi (Adoration) scene in the center and a Nativity and Presentation of Christ in the Temple scene on each of its sides. Hans Memling was a painter that was active in the Netherlands and had connections to the Burgundian court. The Adoration of the Magi is an artistic representation of the Nativity, in which the three kings (magi) present offerings of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to an infant Jesus who is held by the virgin Mary.
