Darb 1718 Egyptian Contemporary Art and Culture Center is a registered non-profit organization Darb 1718 is an Egyptian non-profit organisation founded in 2008.

Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Centre is an Egyptian non-profit organization founded in 2008. In the midst of historic Old Cairo emerges a beating heart for contemporary art and culture in Egypt. Its facilities include a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces that host different art mediums and cultural events. Darb 1718 houses two art exhibition spaces, theater, dance, and concert stages, a

n outdoor cinema for independent film screenings, gardens and rooftops, in addition to an artist residency to accommodate international artists and curators from all around the world. The center provides workshops, programs, and initiatives to educate and mentor emerging artists and offer them a space to exhibit their work alongside established artists. It also organises music festivals, concerts, spaces that are available for rent, and much more. Darb 1718 is a hub connecting Egyptian artists from several walks of life with the local and international arts and culture scene. It is an art nucleus and a gathering point for all parallel events in Egypt. All of the mentioned events and activities take place while also engaging with various social and cultural groups from the Fustat community in the middle of the Pottery Village. here to find us

Applications for "Cairo and...: Collaging Urbanity and Migration" are open!

Starting November 30 and for 3 weeks, artists Duha Mohamed and Mona Essam will lead this seven-session journey through the urban landscape, exploring its temporal spaces, subtle shifts, and transitions.

Participants will work hands-on with mixed media, including photographs, paintings, texts, and textures, thoughtfully cut and pieced together to create artworks reflecting the emotions of belonging and change in urban life.

The workshop concludes with an open studio, offering a space to reflect on the finished pieces that capture the in-between of ‘here’ and ‘there.’

التقديم على ورشة "القاهرة و…:
كولاچ المدينة والهجرة" مفتوح دلوقتي!

من يوم ٣٠ و لمدة ٣ اسابيع الفنانين ضحى محمد و منى عصام هيقودوا رحلة من سبع حصص هنكتشف فيها مشاعر الحياة في المدينة و تغيراتها المفاجئة و المربكة.

المشتركين هيشتغلوا بايديهم بخامات مختلفة زي الصور و لوحات و الكلمات و خيوط مترتبين بعناية علشان ينتجوا قطع فنية بتعكس مشاعر الإنتماء و التغيير البنحس بيها في المدينة.

بعد الورشة كل الاعمال الفنية هتتعرض في ستوديو مفتوح هوفر المساحة اننا نشوف الاعمال بعد ما خلصت.

This weekend, we had the pleasure of hosting director Hend Bakr for the screening of her documentary film, "The Tedious Tour of M", sparking a lively conversation about the fascinating life and mind of avant-garde novelist Mohamed Hafez Ragab. And it was anything but tedious.

We apologize for the technical difficulties experienced by our audience during the screening. Nevertheless, we're grateful for Hend and Mad Films for the opportunity to share such an intriguing work!

اتشرفتا يوم الجمعة اللى فات باستضافة المخرجة هند بكر في عرض فيلمها "جولة ميم المملة"

بعد العرض كان في نقاش حول عقلية الكاتب محمد حافظ رجب المذهلة. و اللى كان آخر حاجة ممكن توصفها انها مملة

بالرغم من وجود صعوبات تقنية في العرض, حابين نشكر هند بكر و ماد فيلمز على فرصة استضافة فيلم مثير زي ده.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of the cherished Egyptian-Armenian visual artist, Vahan Telpian.

Vahan was a mystical artist skilled in painting, sculpting, and decorative design who we were honored to have worked with in Something Else III. With a heart of gold, he was a truly authentic artist who always offered support for everyone, embodying a spirit of generosity.

Rest in peace, Vahan. Your absence will be profoundly felt, but your spirit will forever remain with us.

A filmmaker from Belgium, Loula’s films primarily focus on social issues and ecology, reflecting her commitment to meaningful storytelling. With a background influenced by music, dance, and tradition, cultural exchange plays a vital role in her work.

During her stay in Egypt, Loula is working on a documentary project that delves into audiovisual narratives of people’s encounters with their urban environment. We will shortly be announcing a workshop she is hosting on the theme at Darb 1718

Nada creates hand-tufted art using a punch needle, featuring photo frames, mirror frames, cushion covers, tote bags, tufted jute bags, and coasters.

Jana designs and crafts handmade gadgets using fabric and yarn with high-quality stitching, including wallets, bags, pencil cases, and decorative pieces.

Tram Alwan specializes in customizing eco-interactive events, camps, gifts, and exhibitions by recycling waste and giving old items a new life.

Introducing the talented artists and artisans showcasing their work under "Pottery & Visual Arts" at Nook & Stitch!

Inspired by heritage and natural elements, Nermeen's handmade pottery aims to "mold earth into art".

Subconscious Arts by Amanda Alisubconscious uses visual arts as a language that communicates beyond thoughts and emotions. She uses ink pens on paper to draw simple lines that open new dimensions - in addition to offering Tarot readings.

by Razaz Saif
Deeply rooted in Sudanese heritage, Razaz's pottery and ceramics incorporate designs inspired by tribal identities and traditional markings, with the aim of preserving their cultural and historical significance in a contemporary context.

Rola Ehab
is a self taught painter who enjoys telling stories through hidden messages. She illustrates her identity through the relatable characters she depicts in her paintings.

رولا فنانة علمت نفسها الرسم و بتحاول من خلال فنها انها تسرد القصص في صورة رسائل مخفية. بتحاول رولا انها تعكس هويتها من خلال الشخصيات اللي بترسمها بصورة تخلي كل الناس قادرة تفهمها و ترتبط بيها.

Baladini is empowered by , a community-based network that actively produces, preserves and promotes Egyptian heritage food systems.

🎛️ MUSIC BY HADEEL OSMAN
is a cultural programmer who is interested in the connection between sustainability, cultural heritage, and the arts. In addition to being the curator of Nook and Stitch, Hadeel will be bringing in a themed DJ set to set the mood for the day.

Our Story

In the midst of historic Old Cairo emerges a beating heart for contemporary art and culture in Egypt. Darb 1718 is an Egyptian non-profit organisation founded in 2008. Its facilities include a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces that host different art mediums and cultural events.

Darb 1718 houses two art exhibition spaces, theater, dance, and concert stages, an outdoor cinema for independent film screenings, gardens and rooftops, in addition to an artist residency to accommodate international artists and curators from all around the world. The center provides workshops, programs, and initiatives to educate and mentor emerging artists and offer them a space to exhibit their work alongside established artists. It also organises music festivals, concerts, spaces that are available for rent, and much more.

Darb 1718 is a hub connecting Egyptian artists from several walks of life with the local and international arts and culture scene. It is an art nucleus and a gathering point for all parallel events in Egypt. All of the mentioned events and activities take place while also engaging with various social and cultural groups from the Fustat community in the middle of the Pottery Village.
