Amenhotep III’s Mortuary Complex

Built ca. 1352 BCE

Amenhotep III reigned for nearly four decades. His reign was marked by prosperity, political stability, and the creation of some of ancient Egypt’s most magnificent complexes.

The most impressive mortuary complex in Egypt was built for Amenhotep III by the architect Amenhotep, son of Hapu. It was almost long enough to fit two aircraft carriers inside – 1,968 feet (600 meters) – while being 328 feet (100 meters) wide. Three massive gates aligned on a single axis created a long corridor that led to an immense open courtyard, and several other structures. Inside there were hundreds of sculptures and statues and depictions carved on slabs depicting Amenhotep III’s achievements.

Unfortunately this temple complex was built too close to the Nile and through flooding, earthquakes, and pillaging over the centuries, most of the temple site has deteriorated. The World Monuments Fund is engaged in a project to stabilize, document, and develop a long-range conservation plan for Amenhotep’s Temple. They have already found several important artifacts buried under nearly 4,000 years of soil and river silt. Two gigantic statues of Amenhotep III gazing across the Nile remain on the site, still guarding its entrance. They were misnamed the Colossi of Memnon (an Ethiopian king and warrior) by the Greeks.

Deities in Ancient Egypt

The Ancient Egyptians worshipped many deities.
The beliefs and rituals surrounding these deities formed the core of Ancient Egyptian religion, which emerged some time in prehistory. Deities represented natural forces and phenomena, and the Egyptians supported and appeased them through offerings and rituals so that these forces would continue to function according to maat, or divine order. After the founding of the Egyptian state around 3000 BCE, the authority to perform these tasks was controlled by the pharaoh, who claimed to be the deities' representative, and managed the temples where the rituals were carried out.

The deities' complex characteristics were expressed in myths and in tales regarding the intricate relationships between deities: family ties, loose groups, and hierarchies, and combinations of separate deities into one. The diverse appearances of deities in art—as animals, humans, objects, and combinations of different forms—also alluded, through symbolism, to their essential features.

Step Pyramid

Built ca. 2630

The Step Pyramid was built during the Third Dynasty as the tomb for Pharaoh Djoser. It was designed by the famous architect, Imhotep, who was later deified.

The Step Pyramid stands at a height of 204 feet (62 meters) with six stepped layers. It was the largest building of its time. Here limestone was first used on a large scale as a construction material and the idea of a monumental royal tomb in the form of a pyramid was first truly realized. It can be said without exaggeration that the Step Pyramid complex constitutes a milestone in the evolution of monumental stone architecture, both in Egypt and in the world as a whole. After the Step Pyramid was built, the successors of Djoser began to build pyramids as their tombs.

Prior to the Step Pyramid, pharaohs were buried in mastaba tombs, large rectangular monuments. However Imhotep, Djoser’s vizier, decided that his pharaoh needed a more impressive tomb. He came up with the idea of stacking mastabas on top of one another, while decreasing in length and width. The Step Pyramid got its name from this stepped design.

Sphinx

A part of the Giza pyramid complex, the Sphinx is a massive statue of a seated lion with a man’s head. Though some have disputed the identity of the man, it is generally accepted that the Sphinx is meant to represent the pharaoh Khafre. It is carved from the bedrock at the base of the causeway to Khafre’s Valley Temple.

The lion was a symbol of the sun as well as power and kingship. On the statue of the Sphinx, Khafre wears the nemes headdress, which not only symbolizes kingship, it also keeps the head in proportion to the lion’s body. There was a temple built for the Sphinx, however it was never finished and was possibly never used.

Pyramids of Giza
Built beginning ca. 2560 BCE

The Pyramids of Giza are an important part of ancient Egypt, as well as present-day Egypt. Many people visit Egypt each year to see the pyramids in order to get a glimpse into Egypt’s ancient past. They consist of the pyramids and funerary complexes of the pharaohs Menkaure, Khafre, and Khufu.

The Great Pyramid is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one to remain largely intact. It was built for Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops in Greek). Hemiunu, who served as vizier and royal seal bearer to Khufu, was probably responsible for building Khufu’s pyramid at Giza.

Originally 481 feet (147 meters) tall, with each side about 755 feet (230 meters) wide, this structure took twenty years to build. It is the largest pyramid ever built and is made of over 2.3 million limestone blocks – each weighing from 2.5 to 15 tons! At completion,

Akhetaton (Tell el-Amarna)
Built 1348 – 1344 BCE
The ancient Egyptian city of Akhetaton, also called Tell el-Amarna or Amarna, was the capital city built by Pharaoh Akhnaton and abandoned shortly after his death (ca. 1336 BCE). It was here that he pursued his vision of a society dedicated to the cult of his one god – the Aton.

A series of tablets carved in the face of the cliffs behind Amarna record the foundation of Akhnaton’s new capital city in his own words. He wrote that he was led there by his god – the Aton. He wanted a pristine location that had not been dedicated to other deities. Amarna is 194 miles (312 kilometers) south of Cairo and 250 miles (402 kilometers) north of Luxor. It is located on the east bank of the Nile.

The name Amarna comes from the Beni Amran tribe that lived in the region. Tell means “hill.” The ancient Egyptian name for the city was Akhetaton, which means “the Horizon of the Aton.” Today the city is, for the most part, covered with sand or badly eroded. None of the stonework of the temples or palaces survives, for they were removed after the Amarna Period.

30/06/2022

the oasis is known to have been settled since at least the 10th millennium BC, the earliest evidence of any connection with Ancient Egypt is the 26th Dynasty, when a necropolis was established. Ancient Greek settlers at Cyrene made contact with the oasis around the same time (7th century BC), and the oracle temple of Amun (Greek: Zeus Ammon), who, Herodotus was told, took the image here of a ram. Herodotus knew of a "fountain of the Sun" that ran coldest in the noontime heat.[16] During his campaign to conquer the Persian Empire, Alexander the Great reached the oasis, supposedly by following birds across the desert. The oracle, Alexander's court historians alleged, confirmed him as both a divine personage and the legitimate Pharaoh of Egypt, though Alexander's motives in making the excursion, following his founding of Alexandria, remain to some extent inscrutable and contested. During the Ptolemaic Kingdom, its Ancient Egyptian name was sḫ.t-ỉm3w, meaning "Field of Trees".

Edfu Temple
Built from 237 – 57 BCE
The Temple of Edfu was buried under centuries of sand and silt until the nineteenth century, when French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette rediscovered the site. The complex is one of the most well-preserved sites in Egypt today; its architecture is very much intact, and the building contains a wealth of legible inscriptions on its walls. It is dedicated to the falcon god, Horus.

The temple was built on top of much older ruins dating back to Ramses III, and was constructed over the course of 180 years under a variety of rulers during the Ptolemaic period in Egypt. This period represented a time of Greek rule; each pharaoh was a descendent of Ptolemy, a general in the army of Alexander the Great who took control of the region a few centuries prior to the construction of the temple. However, the temple embodies the traditional architecture of ancient Egypt and is largely free of Hellenistic influence. The temple itself is dedicated to the worship of the Egyptian god Horus, who was frequently merged with the Greek god Apollo. In fact, the city of Edfu was renamed Apollonopolis Magna during Greco-Roman rule in Egypt.
