The village was first established by renowned architect and philosopher Hassan Fathy (1900-1989).

According to the UNESCO’s brochure for the event, New Gourna was designed and built by Fathy between 1946-1952 and was the most famous of his works, for it showcased the concept of supporting the local communities and providing a sustainable development as well as eco-friendly village based on the traditional architectural methodology of local heritage Egyptian buildings.

The village was built from mud bricks, and its homes reflected the ancient Egyptian style of domed roofs and internal yards, all using raw materials from the local environment.

The village was the prototype that inspired his most famous publication: Architecture of the Poor, that was first published in 1976 and inspired generations of architects world-wide.

New Gourna has been restored, and its main square served as the open-air venue for the opening of the National Festival of Tahteeb (stick dance), an ancient Egyptian intangible heritage recognised by UNESCO in 2017. The souq (market) displayed several handcrafted ornaments. It also provided numerous art spaces where artists can work as well as display their artwork inspired by Gourna. Among the artists whose works were on display was renowned painter Mamdouh Ammar, whose studies, experience and art reflected and documented the social history of Gourna village in its prime.

Moringa oleifera (Moringaceae), commonly known as Moringa, is native to northwestern India, and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas. In Africa, it is widely consumed for self-medication by patients affected by diabetes, hypertension, or HIV/AIDS.

Moringa contains many healthful compounds such as:

vitamin A
vitamin B1 (thiamine)
B2 (riboflavin)
B3 (niacin), B-6
folate and ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
calcium
potassium
iron
magnesium
phosphorus
zinc

1. Protecting and nourishing skin and hair

Moringa seed oil is beneficial for protecting hair against free radicals and keeps it clean and healthy. Moringa also contains protein, which means it is helpful in protecting skin cells from damage. It also contains hydrating and detoxifying elements, which also boost the skin and hair.

It can be successful in curing skin infections and sores.

2. Treating edema

Edema is a painful condition where fluid builds up in specific tissues in the body. The anti-inflammatory properties of moringa may be effective in preventing edema from developing.

3. Protecting the liver

Moringa appears to protect the liver against damage caused by anti-tubercular drugs and can quicken its repair process.

4. Preventing and treating cancer

Moringa extracts contain properties that might help prevent cancer developing. It also contains niazimicin, which is a compound that suppresses the development of cancer cells.

5. Treating stomach complaints

Moringa extracts might help treat some stomach disorders, such as constipation, gastritis, and ulcerative colitis. The antibiotic and antibacterial properties of moringa may help inhibit the growth of various pathogens, and its high vitamin B content helps with digestion.

6. Fighting against bacterial diseases

Due to its antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, moringa extracts might combat infections caused by Salmonella, Rhizopus, and E. coli.

7. Making bones healthier

Moringa also contains calcium and phosphorous, which help keep bones healthy and strong. Along with its anti-inflammatory properties moringa extract might help to treat conditions such as arthritis and may also heal damaged bones.

8. Treating mood disorders

Moringa is thought to be helpful in treating depression, anxiety, and fatigue.

9. Protecting the cardiovascular system

The powerful antioxidants found in Moringa extract might help prevent cardiac damage and has also been shown to maintain a healthy heart.

10. Helping wounds to heal

Extract of moringa has been shown to help wounds close as well as reduce the appearance of scars.

11. Treating diabetes

Moringa helps to reduce the amount of glucose in the blood, as well as sugar and protein in the urine. This improved the hemoglobin levels and overall protein content in those tested.

12. Treating asthma

Moringa may help reduce the severity of some asthma attacks and protect against bronchial constrictions. It has also been shown to assist with better lung function and breathing overall.

13. Protecting against kidney disorders

People may be less likely to develop stones in the kidneys, bladder or uterus if they ingest moringa extract. Moringa contains high levels of antioxidants that might aid toxicity levels in the kidneys.

14. Reducing high blood pressure

Moringa contains isothiocyanate and niaziminin, compounds that help to stop arteries from thickening, which can cause blood pressure to rise.

15. Improving eye health

Moringa contains eyesight-improving properties thanks to its high antioxidant levels. Moringa may stop the dilation of retinal vessels, prevent the thickening of capillary membranes, and inhibit retinal dysfunction.

16. Treating anemia and sickle cell disease

Moringa might help a person’s body absorb more iron, therefore increasing their red blood cell count. It is thought the plant extract is very helpful in treating and preventing anemia and sickle cell disease.

The meaning of the Pharaonic name of the Valley of the Queens– Ta Set Neferu – is subject to different interpretations. According to Leblanc, Ta Set Neferu has the meaning ‘the Place of the Royal Children’ (T3 St Nfrw: nfrw in the context of msw nswt ‘Royal Children’ and in a wider sense ‘of the Royal Harim’) (Leblanc 1999b, 833). The name is attested by a series of documents (papyrus, ostraca, stelae, etc.) of the Ramesside period, though the site was already used for burials at least from the 18th Dynasty onward. In Arabic, various toponyms have been used: ‘Biban el Hajj Ahmed’ (the Doors of the Pilgrim Ahmed), ‘Biban el-Sultanat’ (the Doors of the Sultanas), ‘Biban el-Banat’ (the Doors of the Daughters), ‘Biban el-Harim’ (the Doors of the Women) and, lastly, ‘Biban el-Melekat’ or ‘Wadi el-Melekat’ (the Doors, or the Valley, of the Queens, the latter being most commonly used in recent years). Other scholars translate Ta Set Neferu as ‘The Place of Beauty,’ nfrw being given the meaning of ‘beauty’ or ‘perfection,’ based on the documented use of the name in the Ramesside period when the Valley was used primarily for burial of royal women, many of whom were not themselves ‘royal children.’ (Leblanc 1989a, 14f; McCarthy 2011, 2-3; Thomas 1966, 208).

Wishing Eid Mubarak to all of our community, family, friends new and old, our teams, business partnerships, crafts peoples and suppliers.

Eid ul Fitr is known as the lesser Eid, and is determined by the new moon. Eid is a time for reflection and starting afresh, a time to rejoice with family and friends, but also a time for remembering blessings and charity. Fasting teaches empathy and compassion for those less fortunate.

While in orbit over Egypt, an astronaut on the International Space Station (ISS) captured a photograph of this heart-shaped basin bordering the Nile River and the Western Desert. The depression, known as the Faiyum Oasis, spreads across more than 1,200 square kilometers (450 square miles) and was formed from the ancient lakebed of Lake Moeris.

Partial damming of Lake Moeris during the reign of Ptolemy II allowed large areas of fertile alluvial soil to be reclaimed for agriculture. Today saltwater Lake Qarun (Birket Qarun), located on the northern margin of the depression, is the remnant of Moeris. The salinity of Lake Qarun is caused by high evaporation rates in the arid climate.
