On this day in 1969, Led Zeppelin’s debut, self-titled LP debuted on the UK Albums Chart at #6 (May 10)

The album was recorded shortly after the band's formation, took just 36 hours, and cost £1,782 to record.

The band had not yet signed a deal, and there was no record company money to waste on excessive studio time.

According to Jimmy Page, most of the album was recorded live, with overdubs added later.

It was produced by Page, mixed by Page's childhood friend Glyn Johns, and the iconic album cover showing the Hindenburg disaster was designed by George Hardie.

The “Led Zeppelin” album showed the group's fusion of blues and rock, and their take on the emerging hard rock sound was immediately commercially successful, peaking at #1 in Spain, #3 in Finland, #6 in the UK, #8 in Denmark, #9 in Australia, #10 in the US, #11 in Canada and Germany, and #14 in Norway and the Netherlands.

In 2020, the album was ranked #101 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and in 2004 the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

A classic.
