Music is not just music, for some, music is the essence of life. The greatest composers in history (regardless of genre) have been able to take what they see and experience in life and express it through music. If you take time to do nothing but really connect with some pieces of music you really do get a sense of the story it is telling, and indeed you are able to transpose the music onto some event(s) in your life.
Now I do not purport to be a producer, composer or even a great DJ, but I do let my emotions guide the direction of my sets.
When playing in clubs I try to build a story with my set, quite often which are a reflection of where I am in life at that point. But one thing that amazes me, is how the energy of the room, built both by the music I am playing and the crowds engagement can change the direction of my set.
A few times I have been in a rough place in my mind, and my set starts deep, dark or just gnarly - but the way the energy changes and moves throughout everyone in the room is incredible, and directs me down a path of more uplifting, euphoric vibes. (Of course the opposite is also true).
Why am I writing this? Well due to a death in my family, I had to return to the UK in April.
One thing that has been hard for me is not having my decks near me as an outlet for my emotions. I have never noticed this over the last 20+ years until now as I have always been able to either mix, or go to a club and use music as an escape, or a way to process life.
Even though the restrictions around covid are doing my fu***ng nut in, at this point I am grateful that clubs are not open, that festivals are not happening - because it has made me face up to how important music is in my life. I had been taking it for granted for so long (which is not to say I haven't been enjoying it) as it was always available - there were always options.
So this weekend I star the journey back to my home in Valencia, I get to be reunited with the inanimate objects which give me go much joy in life, which give my emotions such a freedom of expression, and there will be plenty of (loud!) music being played in the coming months. And all being well I am hoping to be able to share some of the results with you in the coming weeks.
Hold who is dear to you, if you love someone, tell them. Compliment each other often, support each other always. Tomorrow is not gauranteed so make the most of today.
