The Coalition Government today handed down its second national budget since it came to office, with an estimated $4.552 billion in total expenditures and total revenue of $3.917 billion.
Fiscal deficit is $635.5 million, or 4.5 per cent of Gross Domestic Project (GDP).
Debt to GDP ratio is projected to decline further to 77.8 per cent by end of July 2025, and the target is to reduce this further to around 60 per cent of GDP by 2040.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Development and National Planning and Statistics, Honourable Professor Biman Prasad took over 1 and half hours to deliver the budget address in parliament today.
Key features include;
โข A 7 to 20 per cent pay rise for civil servants, injecting $85 million into the pockets of 42,000 government employees
โข New National Minimum Wage Guideline of $5 an hour to be implemented in 2 phases, starting with $4.50 an hour from 1 August 2024, increasing to $5 an hour from 1 April 2025.
โข $9.2 million payout to the 368 mine workers of Vatukoula, with each miner to be paid a total of $25,000 in two installments. $10,000 will be paid from the 2024-2025 budget while the balance of $15,000 will be paid from next yearโs budget.
โข $57 million pension restoration for Fiji National Provident Fund pensioners, with the first payment of $4 million to be paid this year.
