Do you know there are 300 different sign languages around the world?

Let's take a look at 4 facts you all need to know : 👇🏽

🌏Some countries have more than one sign language.
For example, Canada has both and Quebec Sign Language (LSQ).

🌎Like spoken languages, sign languages have their unique grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, and can express complex ideas and emotions like spoken languages.

🌍Each sign is made up of five components.
They are hand shape, location, movement, orientation and non-manual components. Changing any one of them changes the overall meaning of the signs.

🌍Sign languages were not recognized as legitimate languages until the 20th century. At the moment, only 41 countries recognize sign languages as official languages.

Old Norse played a key role in the formation of the English , as well as other Scandinavian languages.

🌍 Mycenaean Greek :

Oldest language from the Hellenic group of Indo-European languages. Legal documents kept in ancient royal palaces and trading centres were written in Mycenaean Greek.📝

🌍 Gallic :

The language spoken by the Gallic tribes inhabited present-day France, Italy, and Switzerland. It has laid the groundwork for modern French, which includes 400 words with Gallic origins.

How an illiterate Native American created a written language for the Cherokee Nation?

👇🏽Read the story of Sequoyah. 📖

Before colonization, more than 300 diverse were spoken by Native Americans. 🌎

However, nearly all of these languages had one thing in common :
they had no written form.

In 1809, a Cherokee man named Sequoyah began working on a writing system for his nation’s language - the Cherokee language. ✍🏽

By profession, he was a silversmith and blacksmith. ⚒️💎

His military service in the U.S. Army during the Creek War of 1813-1814 allowed him to spend time with Americans.

Sequoyah was fascinated by how Americans used writing to learn and share information.

So he set out on a mission to create a written language for the Cherokee people. 🎯

12 years later, he completed the Cherokee syllabary. 🙌🏽🙏🏽

In the 21st century, Sequoyah’s Cherokee syllabary remains in use.

👉🏽 Dactylology - Technique of communicating with fingers, which represents the alphabetic letters and are used to spell.

👉🏽 French-inspired signs - Gestures that combine mime and the first letter of the word.

👉🏽 Invented signs for words that have their own sign.

▶️ Test the interpreter's to see if they are real problem solvers.
