Work has progressed over the weekend with the raised terrace behind the accommodation barn. Rebuild of the wall and filling in if the old doorway all using reclaimed blocks from the demolition as a way of keeping the base similar in look. Another 1.5 tonnes of backfill in place which we will allow to settle for a while before putting a Plastic membrane and a re enforcing steel mesh before doing a concrete pour to top it off.

Sometimes the little jobs take just as long as ones that really stand out!
All of the existing tops of the walls in all four bedrooms have to be finished off in lime render, especially where they meet new ceilings😉
So far two done two to go🤓

Not quite how I had expected Friday morning to be!
We have had a lot, in fact a mega amount of rain in the last 48hrs. So first 3hrs dealing with and fixing a leak in the roof of the barn!
Then the contractors clearing the site next door knock the old wall which was not in the plan! Then they discover another well right next to the demolished dangerous wall! And don’t like the look of the foundations and want to rip that up as well.😳 so I make coffee for all to bring a little calm to the situation while we think about what to do😉
Mrs D away working, my French is being tested to the current limit in negotiations with both the contractor and the office of the mayor who’s project it is.

30/10/2023

Plumbing connected we now have water in the barn again, this time it’s from the mains so drinkable!
Also progress on two bathrooms with ceilings in and ventilation installed.
Further work on plaster boarding in two bedrooms our hope is that we can get the rest of the bedrooms and bathrooms up to the same level by the end of this week🤓

It has not stopped raining all day today, however we have still managed to tidy up the new oil tank position. Once painted in dark green the whole thing should blend in with the hedge quite nicely.
Always an interesting job cutting down any panel and remaking it!

Dreadful mole problem!😂
Been busy removing another 7 plum trees for the orchard today. It’s all part of the revitalisation of the orchard with new mixed fruit plants going in each year over a 10 year period.
Next we need to remove all the roots cut up the wood and put into the wood store for next years fire wood, add some organic matter and plant in the new trees.

Good progress yesterday, we managed to get all the broken down concrete and blocks from the walls off site and to the déchèterie.
A nice surprise was Miguel from the plumbers came back sooner than we had anticipated to reconnect the oil lines to the repositioned tank, he then bled the system and fired up the boiler to test everything was working correctly, so we know we have a working heating system again 🤓 for when we need it later in the year.

The first picture says it’s down and cleaned up😂
The second is the reality! A couple tonnes of concrete some of which has to be broken up into more manageable chunks with a jack hammer built for the job, then there is the small matter of getting all to the local déchèterie (tip)

This is what a day of action looks like or is that carnage😂. Never have encountered a pair of walls built to withstand a bomb blast! Our deepest appreciation to Denis who tracked his 2 tonne machine around to help, and we still had to use a sledge hammer and a big jack hammer to break the first one downed into manageable pieces. Tomorrow the battle resumes😂
Oh and we got the trench dug to take the redirected oil pipes to the re positioned tank.
The plumber came and made good all the connections in the residential barn, connected the pipes in the cave so on his next visit we will get connected to the water meter and have the oil lines reconnected to the tank. We are making progress.

And just like that, all before breakfast, the tanks were re-sited 😁👍🏻. Thanks to Ramos 🙏🏻

Just celebrating the last days of the tanks 😉
Keeping our fingers crossed that a neighbour with a manitou comes tomorrow morning and we can get them relocated, opening up the petit cuisine window view and letting loads more light into what will become the new back door to the salon.

Both shutters and windows removed, cleaned, repaired and put back in.
Not totally finished as there is a pane of original glass missing and there is a bit of fitting to do before the windows will close smoothly, but a vast improvement over picture No. 3
Also put the keystone back in the correct position, resin replacement to the joints and completed the repair to the lime render

We enjoyed Bordeaux for the rugby World Cup, great atmosphere, game was not the best but met loads of wonderful people, the social was tremendous. Here we have the Chilean fans band entertaining outside the ground before the start of the match.

Kitchen update.
All the doors and handles are now fitted, which is a nice way of finishing the week.
Walnuts de husked and drying and cooking apples peeled, cored, chopped, cooked, cooled and going in the freezer.
Just waiting for another menuisière to arrive and see if they can make a pair of windows to match the existing ones downstairs in the barn.

Last of the marche du producteurs for thé season so we were at Villeréal to enjoy the atmosphere.
Continued progress in the kitchen and the concrete slab was poured this afternoon which will house the relocated oil tanks so that we can open up the rear door of the salon and create a terrace

Milou
This is the post we truly hoped we would be able to make. Following 8 days (7 of which we believed we may lose this precious little soul 😭 ) of Milou being inexplicably seriously ill; we were able to bring her back from the vet yesterday evening and we can confidently say she has turned a massive corner! Having not really eaten at all for 7 days, she is now doing her very best to enthusiastically make up for that 😅.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the vets and staff at the Veterinaire des bastides and to the Universe for allowing Milou to come back to us.

Whilst the hard work that Mark puts in and the idyllic environment contribute essentially to what makes this the Home of the Calm Heart; Milou and her mum Fleurie are both so much of the Heart here and so, we will sleep so much easier tonight having both of them healthy, happy and here ❤️💖💝💓💞❤️‍🔥💗

Feeling so relieved, heartful, grateful, happy, hopeful and at peace 🙏

Today is hedge cutting day, all 50m of it😳 There is a need to keep it of the railings according to the previous owner otherwise you end up needing to paint it because the paint has been compromised by wet foliage touching it. Kind of makes sense especially when he told us that last time it took 35lts of paint🫣

We finished painting the ceiling in what will be the salon of the 2nd barn. Certainly much lighter in there and it will improve again once the walls are lime washed.

Two more to go and that will be all the joists cleaned in what will be the lovely 47m2 Salon. A really filthy job getting all the old lime wash and years and years of dirt from having both cows and pigs in here washed off!

You know when there is some serious rendering to be done, when a whole mixer load of lime render does under a half of the wall! As today's temps are up to 41 deg, the rest will have to wait until the morning, or it will just crack by drying too quickly.
We started cleaning the salon ceiling, as well as harvesting and freezing 15kg of figs 😳 and prepping peach 🍑 and peppadew 🌶️ jam, which Mrs D will make in the morning😃
