And they’re off….

Steve Hall and Tim are taking part in a charity cycle event today. Steve met Tim recently at a local gym. Tim has lost his sight but told Steve he loved to cycle and wanted to take part in a charity race. Steve offered to pilot Tim on our tandem so that he could take part. Today is the day…. Wish them luck. If you woukd like to support this local Davenham charity please donate.
A little more about the charity Tiny Steps.
On the 13th July 2016 tragically Dave Holman lost his life in a road traffic accident he was only 38 he was a loving son , brother , Uncle and great friend to many and is missed beyond measure.

Every year since Dave passed away his friends have organised what has become “The Dave Holman Challenge “ raising much needed funds for Tiny Steps which is a local charity in Davenham created by two wonderful people Martin and Laura Clifton after their their daughter was born with west syndrome and severe learning difficulties , they very quickly discovered that services and support for families like theirs was non existent so their aim is to provide a sensory centre and social cafe for children and young people with additional needs and their families in the Northwich and Winford area.

It is very hard to find activities that are accessible and enjoyable for families this situation. Their plan is to change this by providing this service within the local community.

Tiny steps is a non-profit making charity run by volunteers and is heavily reliant on donations. They are in the early stages of building the charity so please support where you can.

Slice of lemon anyone?

Steve’s place has this wonderful lemon tree in the garden. At the moment it’s heavily laden with fruit, more lemons than anyone needs for their G&T.

Many of the lemons are enormous. The last photo shows you the size next to a ‘normal’ size one.

I feel some zesty cooking on? Where shall I start, lemon pudding? Lemon meringue pie? Lemon curd?…..I may be busy for some time 🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋

….and finally some stills so you can take a good look at the detail.

What are you all up to this fine day?

This morning I woke up to beautiful blue skies and it filled me with energy.

I decided to get outside and do some weeding and also treated the box hedge for the dreaded box moth. The garden was only planted last year and I honestly had not been aware that the box moth was such an issue here in NW England. I thought I’d seen the back of it when I left France but with temperatures rising it seems to have moved Up North. As soon as I noticed the problem last year, I cut the plants back and treated them. In order to have any chance of keeping the box alive and well in my garden I will have to regularly treat from now and throughout the next few month. I will keep you posted as to how I get on.

But look how glorious the daffs and grape hyacinths look in the borders… and that blue sky 🌞

I have also tidied my garage and taken a load of rubble ( stones dug from the garden) to the tip. After the tip, I managed to vacuumed the car, just before the sky clouded over and it started to spit 🌦️

I don’t think the rain will come to anything today but I’ve now come inside for lunch before getting ready to go to my mums.

Mum and I, along with her cousins, Cristine and Diane are heading off to Manchester later. We are having tea out and then we are going to watch Diversity… Do you remember them from Britain’s Got Talent?

Really looking forward to it and no doubt we will be black flipping and somersaulting our way home 🤸🤣

Love my garden….. roll on spring, some dry weather and a little sunshine please 🌞

Have you finished your turkey yet?

I love turkey and this year we had a 17lb beast that fed 15 of us on Christmas Day followed by the essential turkey butties with salt and white pepper. ( yes! It must be white pepper)

The last two evenings Steve and I enjoyed delicious homemade gluten free turkey pie. Night one with home made Chips and last night with carrots and loads of sautéed sprouts. The turkey is now gone and I’m feeling a bit sad…. I haven’t got tired of it at all.

What do you make with your left over turkey?

I prefer pie to curry, stew or soup and this years pie was one of my favorites… stuffed full of white and dark turkey, loads of leeks and just a little bacon, cream and whole grain mustard…. Yummy, Yummy, Yummy.

I made the GF pastry to my usual recipe (thanks to Liz ) but instead of rubbing in the butter as usual, I froze the butter and grated it into the flour before adding the egg and water. This gives the pastry a ruff puff texture rather than a short crust which was perfect for our pie.

Well we did it. We managed to make something of that rubbish bit of wood and turned it into a cake stand for our celebration cake.

Despite preparing a speech for our meal, I didn’t get up and say it 🤦‍♀️, so here it is instead.

I have such an amazing family and 2023 has been a year of wonderful things to celebrate.

Whilst the main purpose of our meal out on Saturday was to belatedly celebrate Steve’s 60th we both agreed that it was the perfect time to reflect on all the milestones reached this year.

We started 2023 with our son Adam and Olivia’s wedding day in January and what a beautiful joyous day that was. March came around quickly and with it, our nephew Matthews 30th Birthday. April was a big month with Steve’s 60th followed a day later by our 30th wedding anniversary.
Our daughter in law Jemima turned 30 just a few weeks ago and our son Jamie will be 30 in a couple of weeks. 1993 was a very busy year!

After starting 2023 with Adam and Olivia’s wedding it only seems fitting that we find ourselves looking forward to closing this momentous year with the birth of their baby, due in December. Yes…. Steve and I are so excited at the prospect of becoming grandparents!

My 2023 cake won’t be winning any awards, neither will our makeshift cake stand but despite that, we had a fantastic evening.

Full cake post to follow shortly!

Making the most of the beautiful September weather this evening. Princess Molly is perfectly framed at the top of the path. Under the pergola … she’s been sleeping on the garden furniture for most of the day.

It’s September and this it’s it’s first year after planting and it’s given me months of beautiful colour over the garden arches. It’s got to be one of the best.

You know me- I do like a challenge..

Here is a VEGAN & GLUTEN FREE lemon cake I made this morning. Well it looks like cake and I can confirm it also tastes like cake.

Honestly….. it’s not as full on tasty as my usual butter and egg filled GF lemon cake but it’s a blooming good alternative for those who are plant based.

I also mixed up a quick crispy cake too-filled with sticky, buttery goodness(see last two pics)

Back to be lemon cake…… it’s the first time I’ve made it so I’ve had to taste it before I give it to anyone else but it’s now wrapped up and in its way to reversals with me.

Our director follows a vegan diet and she will be the best to judge if this recipe is a keeper or not.

If you fancy seeing more about the play I’m helping with please give a follow. If your local to Cheshire why not come along and watch.

I know you all miss watching Steve and I as we get stuff done so here’s a little clip of us last night.

No not DIY this time but you will hear me doing my usual scream as things don’t go exactly to plan!

Louie delivered a live mouse to us and our mission was to rescue it and release it back into the garden.

I am not in the least bit scared of mice… unlike my Mum. Sorry Mum, please do not watch this video!!!!

You will not know I am not scared as every time it moves I can not help but scream my blooming head off…. Why is that?

Is it the way they move? Fast and wriggly? I honestly do not know.

My failed attempts at wrapping little “the mousey in the housey” into the t-towel meant that the poor soul has to leap off the relative safety of the curtain pole.. What an athlete he is, but did he jump from the frying pan into the fire?

Eventually, after much screaming from me and lots of hilarity, Steve the hero came to the rescue…

Little mousey lives to fight another day 🐭

For those of you asking about Princess Molly…here she is!

It’s so difficult taking photos of her, she literally puts her head down when I come close with my phone… however, in the protective cover of Prince Louie ( taking the limelight as usual) you can see her happy as ever.

At the end of a busy day I love to retreat to the lounge and relax and watch the tv.

It’s my first year in my new home and I’m still adjusting to life in my New Build. The lounge is lovely and cool in the evening and after a day in the busy kitchen living space at the back of the house this room feels calm and relaxing.

One or both the cats usually join me ( Steve too if he’s not biking or playing tennis or fixing something in the garage 🤣)but last evening it was just me and Prince Louie.

Prince Louie just knows how to throw a pose…. He’s made for the camera, don’t you think.

A few of you have recently been asking about how Steve and I have adjusted to life after the Chateau and with this in mind, over the next week or so, I hope to bring you a few posts talking about this. Steve is on board too so if you have any questions please comment below or send me a private message.

We may do a video or just written posts, I’m not sure yet but we will try to answer your questions..

Before too long Instagram is going to be filled with everything Christmas. Well before that happens we have Halloween to contend with.

I’m not going to be filling my house with everything and anything Orange but I do like a few scary things sprinkled around.

When the boys were very young I used to love giving them a fright. I would be happy hiding behind a door or the curtain for quite some time in the sure knowledge one of the boys would be walking past soon. It never ceased to amuse me when they jumped out of their skins as I leaped out at them shouting BOO! I know, I’m easily amused and it’s properly cruel… but still!!!

The thing is, the boys are now 34 and 30 and I still can’t help myself. I will hide at any opportunity I get and the boys still jump out of their skins….. they never learn 🤣🤣

They do however “get me back” on occasion and have hidden themselves or just jumped out at me and shouted BOO. Yes Jamie I am talking about you and me and Prince Louie 🐈 will get our own back soon so be afraid… be very afraid.

The boys both enjoyed dressing up at Halloween, we’ve had witches, wizards, pumpkins and mummies.. never buying an off the shelf costume and always doing it with whatever we had around the house. When I look back at photos they really were pretty shocking… ketchup for blood and toilet roll as bandages. Hilarious to me but I’m not so cruel as to share the photos with you.

As part of our steel garden products we have added these cute little steel BATS. I’ve named them Bella but as you get 3 with each order you can give them all a different name. They can be used inside or out and you paint them if you like or just leave them outdoor and let them rust.

Just £12 for 3- what names would you give them?

Order now on our website.. link in bio.

For those of you that think I’ve hidden Steve away I thought I had better let him show his face… he’s still here in the UK with me and we’ve been enjoying some family time.

It was Steve’s mum 87th birthday yesterday and we gathered together to celebrate.

We enjoyed some fabulous lasagne followed by a huge selection of puds and not forgetting the birthday cake.

Adam and Olivia , we missed you and we are looking forward to your move back Up North very soon. I can’t wait to get us all together.

When we sold the Château and came back to the UK I promised myself I would get involved with a drama group.

As a child I had always loved drama. If you asked my siblings they would tell you how I used to know all the tv ads, and would learn them off by heart and perform them endlessly, and apparently, annoyingly. I can’t imagine what the problem was…… 🤣

My favorite advert was the Clark’s shoes one from the 70’s and because of this I was soon given the nick name at home- A Proper Little Madam(if you know, you know!).

I have hence decided to pick up this lost love and I’ve joined our local amateur theatre. You would think that after quite a few tv appearances on Château DIY, I would have the courage to get up on stage and just get on with it but honestly, I’m terrified!!!

The group are a lovely bunch of like minded folks and I am loving being part of this community but I’m not yet ready to tread the boards.

For the time being, I am learning the ropes back stage and I’m fully involved with their next production. The director has put a lot of faith in me, letting a complete novice help her with this play.

Rules For Living is a dark comedy that the audience are going to love. I will tell you more about it in the next few weeks and I would love it if you could go over and give their Instagram page a follow. I am going to be helping out with the social media and I’d love to see a few familiar faces over there.

If your local to Davenham I can not recommend the play enough…. It’s going to be a brilliant night out. Tickets are available soon and it would be great to get done new theatre goers.

The sun has been shining again at last.

My tomatoes are starting to turn red so it shouldn’t be too long before we get to taste them.
I love the smell of tomato plants…. You only have to touch a leaf and the aroma on your hands fills your mind with the wonderful taste of tomato to follow. Just a little more patience is required.

Let’s not ignore the halo of sunflowers above my tomatoes.

If you remember, these seeds came in a packet inside a card, simply marked Sunflowers. I had no idea what variety they were and sewed them all in an egg box on the window sill. It turns out they were mixed variety. There are large single head ones, medium size ones and quite a few multi headed ones. I’m so glad I didn’t thin them out, deciding instead to let them all grow bunched up at the back of the tomato bed.

They look so cheery, every time I stand at my kitchen window they bring a smile to my face.

Best ever Gluten Free Yorkshire Puddings.

Honestly……They may even have been the best Yorkshire puddings I’ve ever made including the ones with gluten in.

Since having to adapt my kitchen to accommodate Steve’s severe allergy to wheat cooking and baking without gluten has not been without some disappointment. Recipes have to be adapted and changed overtime until you finally get the balance of ingredients just right.

Yesterdays tea was going to be a simple affair with sausage and onions in gravy with a few Yorkshire puddings to fill us up.

Yorkshire pudding success has evaded me to date but I’m not one to give up without a fight. So decided to give them another go.

The recipe I found online was using only cornflour but I didn’t have enough in the larder. I decided to go half and half with cornflour and GF Plain flour mix.

I added a good pinch of salt and whisked in 6 whole eggs (YES 6!), followed by 300ml of semi skimmed milk, whisking constantly by hand with a balloon whisk.

I put 1tsp corn oil in the bottom of each muffin hole of my tin and put the tin in a very hot ( 220 c) oven. You must leave the tin in the oven for at least 10 mins until the oil is really hot.

Take the hot tin from the oven and quickly divide the mixture between the 12 holes ( the oil will spit and hiss)and put straight back into the hot oven.

Do NOT OPEN the oven during cooking which will take 20 mins to see the puddings rise and go a dark golden colour. Don’t be tempted to bring them out any sooner.

I was delighted to watch the puddings rise and become these beautiful specimens!!!

They were crispy on the outside with soft centres and were utterly delicious .

That’s it folks! Finally, I’ve mastered the perfect Yorkshire pud!

What’s next on my list?

I am thrilled with my new cushions for the lounge. I wanted to have some cushions made in the same fabric as my curtains and I’ve spent weeks looking for a suitable fringe to edge them.

There are so many beautiful trimmings available but they are so expensive and in the end I decided to go for a matching piped edge.

I’m so pleased I did…..The piping, although quite understated, really finishes the cushions off and I love how they look perched on top of my velvet sofas.

My mum taught me to sew and I’m capable of making things myself but I just wouldn’t be able to achieve such a top end finish as Sheila, my wonderful, clever, sewing genius. Sheila has been making my curtains and soft furnishings for more than 20 years and she’s done another brillant job for me again. Thank you Sheila 🥰

I have filled them with feather inserts from Dunelm.

Last Friday Steve and I had our first ever aborted tandem ride. Steve had planned a route from Congleton that took us past a Gluten Free Chippy where we planned to have our lunch. We set off but just 10 mins into the ride the heavens opened and the rain drenched us through so we turned back and headed home. There’s a first time for everything!

Steve however was still hankering after those Gluten Free fish and chips so today we set off once again…

Take two…. It’s been much better weather today and we have enjoyed a lovely ride along the canals through the potteries. The countryside here in the UK really is magnificent (when it isn’t raining).

We were nearing the chippy and we were both looking forward to our lunch…. Now, bear in mind we’ve been looking forward to this all week and we had already cycled over 30 km so you can imagine our disappointment when the blooming chippy was closed… so it’s not only in France where you get “fermeture exceptionnelle” 🤣

Anyhow, not to worry, we found a lovely place for a long lunch before heading back home along an old disused railway.

We did a total of about 60 kms and we didn’t see a drop of rain…

That Gluten Free Fish and chips will have to wait for another day.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.
