A bittersweet birthday this year.

Yesterday was the last day I could officially call 2 Glenview Place my own.

The keys were handed back to my fabulous landlord and it’s time to move on to something new.

Thank you all again for your support and for all your kind words & gifts over the past few weeks - it really means a lot. ❤️

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the closure of Lily’s Florist.

The financial strain over the last few years - Covid, the cost-of-living crisis and a significant increase in card fees has become too much of a burden for my small business to carry.

Thank you to all my clients for your continued support, I wouldn’t have come this far without you.

I am sad to leave such a welcoming community and clients I now think of as friends.

I am extremely proud of all of my accomplishments over the past 9 years and will cherish all the memories I’ve made.

My health & well being along with the happiness of my family are my top priory.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to keep supporting you local, small businesses though these difficult times.

Please keep your eyes peeled for some fantastic goodies that I’ll be selling off over the next week - suitable for events, florists or general bargain hunters.

:: CASH V CARD ::

I've never been one to complain about card payments but when you break it down it does make an impact.

We are seeing more and more customers pay by card and the little blurb below really puts it into perspective.

As a small business processing fees can be a bit of a kicker. I would never refuse card payment and have found it difficult to explain to customers that cash is king.

Please consider this when using a small business - whip out the cash ;)

This might make you think....

Please understand what NOT using cash is doing.
Cash is important!
Why should we pay cash everywhere with banknotes instead of a card?

- I have a £50 banknote in my pocket. Going to a restaurant and paying for dinner with it.
- The restaurant owner then uses the bill to pay for the laundry.
- The laundry owner then uses the bill to pay the barber.
- The barber will then use the bill for shopping.

After an unlimited number of payments, it will still remain a £50, which has fulfilled its purpose to everyone who used it for payment and the bank has jumped dry from every cash payment transaction made...

- But if I come to a restaurant and pay digitally - Card, and bank fees for my payment transaction charged to the seller are 3%, so around £1.50 and so will the fee £1.50 for each further payment transaction or owner re laundry or payments of the owner of the
laundry shop, or payments of the barber etc.....

Therefore, after 30 transactions, the initial £50 will remain only £5 and the remaining £45 became the property of the bank thanks to all digital transactions and fees

Small businesses need your help and this is one way to help ourselves too. Pull small draws of cash out at a time and use that instead of tap, credit, etc.
When this is put into perspective, imagine what each Retailer is paying on a monthly basis in fees at 3% per transaction through their POS machine. If they have, for example, £50,000 in sales & 90% are by Card, they are paying £1500 in fees in ONE Month. £18,000 in a year! That comes out of their income every month. That would go a long way to helping that small business provide for its family!

Valentine’s Day - 8 days to go!

I’ve not really promoted it much this year - pricing uncertainty and the cost of living has been a constant concern.

However, I have now pre ordered my roses and we are good to go!

We will have gorgeous Freedom roses available for our dozens. Long lasting and a beautiful vibrant red.

These come with thistle and mixed foliage, presented in water in a gift box.

We have limited roses available and this year once they are gone, they are gone.

“The unfortunate truth of owning and running a business”

Running a business is extremely hard.
What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid back people.

People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.

People expect you to be available 24/7 and at the drop of a hat because “you work for yourself so you can make time” unfortunately this is not the case most of the time.

Friends and family will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.

You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.

Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All whilst being a parent, a husband or a wife, family support, friend... it’s one of the hardest things you will try and balance ever.

There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed. It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.

Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives. Be kind, be patient, support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around!
