There’s a lot of chat currently around when to plant tulips to avoid the dreaded tulip fire which has been prevalent these past couple of years. Mild winters are an issue but there are a few things that can be done to minimise the risk of tulip fire. It can be helpful to understand how tulip fire gets a hold on your beloved tulips in the first place.

Tulip fire is a botrytis, a fungus which is found in the soil so it’s a good idea not to grow tulips in the same space year after year to allow the soil to recover, at least three years according to a lovely lady .

Planting tulip bulbs close together in a designated bed when climate conditions are likely to continue to be mild going forward is also not recommended. Even bulb lasagnes as popularised by Sarah Raven and Monty Don may not provide adequate space between the foliages preventing good air flow, needed to minimise tulip fire which thrives in humid conditions.

Storing tulips in the fridge is no guarentee the growing flowers once above ground will not be hit by tulip fire. If storing bulbs in the fridge then consider the effect of ethylene given off fruits etc as this may adversely affect the growing tulip bulb. Also, any moisture which gets to the bulbs won’t be helpful. Best to use a fridge designated for bulbs only.

Storing anywhere for any length of time it is recommended to inspect the bulbs frequently and remove any that develop the usual turquoise bloom or otherwise deteriorated.

Anyway, just a few more thoughts to consider when planting your tulip bulbs if you have yet to do so. Mine are already in but in crates and pots this year to help move ability should there be any issues.
And we haven’t even mentioned squirrels, voles nor mice!

Coming towards the end of our fresh flower season and time to get cracking on digging up the dahlias! Wonderful to meet up with some lovely people over the weekend, all eager to know more about how to overwinter and store dahlias and how to prep them for flowering next season. And even the sun shone! 🌸

04/10/2024

What a beautiful day to deliver the last of this season’s mixed bouquets made up of flowers grown on our micro flower farm in Medstead. It’s been such a difficult season, battling not only with the unpredictable, wet and windy weather but battling voles, mice, rabbits and the occasional muntjac not to mention the enormous number of slugs! But we can now put all that behind us as we begin the momentous task of clearing flower beds and sowing seeds for next season’s offerings.
We still have dahlias if anyone wants a bunch though we are beginning to dig them up too. Looking forward to meeting all of you who have booked onto our dahlia tutorials tomorrow!
