The “Family Man”
Nov 22, 1946 - Feb 03, 2024

I’m getting goose bumps as I write this. Aston “Family Man” Barrett, has passed away. What’s happening in this world of Reggae? The trail blazers are leaving us one by one.

Steel Pulse breathed, ate, slept, lived and worshipped Family Man’s bass lines. “Natural Mystic,” “Them Belly Full,” “Kinky Reggae,” “Crazy Bald Head,” “Heathen,” “Race Race,” “Smile Jamaica,”….let me draw the line right there, or else we won’t be able to complete this text. All his bass lines were “home runs.” And if you are into cricket, they were like “sixes.” In other words, they were all knocked completely out of the ball park.

Aston “Family Man” Barrett. What a genius. Now, 43 years after Bob’s passing his bass lines are copied over and over and over again by those within and outside of the genre that saw the necessity to emulate that low frequency of a drug we all got hooked on. For those who have never met Family Man, well, he was a man of very few words, whose bass guitar was even taller than he was. He would allow you to lead the conversation. I believe it was his way of saying “Hmmm, I’ll let my bass lines do the talking!” We have followed Family Man throughout the years and felt his pain when he lost his father (1985), his brother Carly, back in 1987 and the cruel law suit he endured 18 years ago, that left him virtually bankrupt.

Nevertheless, we give thanks that we have been able to share the same stage with this legend, of which our last recollected experience was in Brazil, in 2012. The world will never bear witness to a musical union as it was with Bob Marley and the Wailers, featuring the original “Dynamic Duo,” the Barret Brothers. The good thing about a legend is that their achievements last forever. I dare any man to come forward in this reggae genre and claim these guys were never their teachers or biggest inspiration…. I dare you?!

Aston “Family Man” Barrett - your ingenuity is irreplaceable and eternal - you join the players of instruments.

RIP RIP…

Luciano Messenjah 🙌 (born Jepther McClymont) stepped into the reggae spotlight after the tragic passing of Garnet Silk in December 1994, becoming the next champion of dancehall’s revived cultural sound. “Poor And Simple” from 1993 was his first release on VP, followed by “One Way Ticket” and “Jah Is Alive,” and the album One Way Ticket in 1994, all produced by Fatis Burrell for Xterminator.

Luciano had major label releases through Chris Blackwell’s Island Jamaica in 1995 and 1996 but would reconnect with VP starting in 1999 with the outstanding Sweet Over My Soul. Eight more albums followed, including Serious Times in 2004 and its enduring anthem, “Give Praises.” Luciano has continued to release high quality music through the years, consistent with this original identity as a leading exponent of cultural reggae. Blessed Earthstrong!

🙌🏼 40 Years ago this month, released the 4th studio album by , simply titled Mundell…

Listen Now → spoti.fi/38kS5ds

The album would become a cult classic and enhance the prolific 22-year-old singer’s reputation as one of the greatest in reggae. The release was his first on , which was becoming the most relevant label globally for new reggae in the early 1980s, and 1982 was a standout year with Mister Yellowman, Michael Prophet’s Gunman, Michigan and Smiley’s Downpression, and Johnny Osbourne’s Never Stop Fighting all hitting the racks.

Clocking in at just over 30 minutes, with its eight songs, Mundell arguably doesn’t have a weak moment, mixing largely spiritual lyricism, exemplified on “Red Gold and Green” and “Rasta Have The Handle,” and a handful of love songs, such as the spiteful “Jacqueline.” The sound represented a shift from the rough rockers of Augustus Pablo to the sparse rub-a-dub style associated with producer Henry Junjo Laws, the Roots Radics band, and engineer Scientist.

Within 18 months of its release and following one more album, Hugh Mundell was shot to death in a car while traveling with his close friend Junior Reid, depriving reggae of one of its shining lights. Greensleeves acquired Mundell's debut album Africa Must Be Free By 1983, and began reissuing it in 1986.

Today the late Garnett Silk would have turned 55 years old. Instead he died a tragic death only 28 years of age when trying to rescue his mother from a burning house that had been set on fire because of accidental gun fire on a propane gas tank. Garnett Silk was survived by a wife, three children and two brothers.

At the time he had been laying down tracks for his second album with producer Errol Brown and ten tunes were completed and released several years later.

Garnett Silk was a prominent person in the early 90’s rasta renaissance, a time when a new breed of cultural singers entered the stage. Tony Rebel and Everton Blender were part of this movement.

He started his career deejaying as Little Bimbo with tunes such as See Bimbo Yah, but later adopted a style that was highly conscious showcasing his gospel influenced tenor voice. He marked a turning point in reggae and paved the way for singers such as Luciano, Jahmali, Bushman, Sizzla, Anthony B and rasta converts like Buju Banton and Capleton.

Bobby “Digital” Dixon was the mastermind behind his only full-length album – the astonishing 'It’s Growing' released in 1992. The album was an instant bestseller in Jamaica and Garnett Silk managed to secure an international record deal with Atlantic.

Even though he had a short career he recorded with some of Jamaica’s top talents, including King Jammy, Steely & Clevie, Richard “Bello” Bell and Sly & Robbie, dropping hit tunes like Fill Us Up With Your Mercy, Hello Mama Africa and Zion in a Vision.
