Myths from the Manor - The Medieval Wing at Boreat Manor dates back to 1066 and is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former Lord of the Manor who goes by the name of Hamlyn. Hamlyn roams the medieval wing and has been seen on the stairs leading to the galleried bedroom. An ancient fireplace and a door leading to a room that no longer exists has been uncovered during renovation works and it is believed that Hamlyn occupied these rooms with his family during Tudor times when Boreat Manor was a much bigger property, the original manor having been destroyed by fire. There is a tale that has been handed down through time that Hamlyn’s wife was an adulterous who had many affairs and that one of her jealous lovers set fire to the house in a fit of rage. The younger daughter whose presence has been felt and heard in the hall way of the main house which Hamlyn refers to as ‘Up Manor’ was tragically killed in this fire. The door to the medieval wing which gives access to ‘Up Manor’ has to remain open or there is poltergeist activity. It is believed that Hamlyn needs to be near his daughter. The daughter has been seen by previous occupants and staff and she is believed to be about nine or ten years old with curly hair wearing a type of medieval hat. Hamlyn has communicated that he will not rest until justice has been done and he does not like flowers in the window as they reminded him of his daughter’s grave.

We would like to thank everyone who turned up for our event on Saturday (Psychic Supper with Michelle), what a wonderfully eventful evening. All those who have attended our events over the last couple of months know that Michelle is due to have her baby any time now so we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all her hard work to date and to wish her the very best over the next couple of months and to have a happy and joyful babymoon. We do aim to hold another event in the New Year - so watch this space!

Saturday evening gave us our first Tarot and Tapas event which sold out and it would appear from the feed back we have received so far everyone had a good evening, enjoyed the food, the medieval history of the house and found their personal tarot and tea leaf readings fascinating. We will be having a similar event soon watch this space.

Cupcake Decorating Children's Parties

If you are stuck for an original idea or looking for something different as a Birthday treat for your children then why not try a Cupcake Decorating Party. Mary's Kitchen at Boreat Manor will provide everything needed for your party and tidy everything away after the party. Mary is very creative and will adapt each party to suit the main age of the children attending. Your little baker and friends will create their own designs under our guidance. The table in the dining room is large enough to accommodate up to 12 children with ease and there is access to the farmhouse kitchen for washing messy hands.

Your 2 hour Children's Cupcake Decorating Party package consists of:

6 pre baked cupcakes per child
A Fairtrade Chef's Hat per Child (from ethicalkidz)
A Fairtrade Apron per Child (from ethicalkidz)
A set of 8 fabric crayons - children can decorate their hat and apron with their name and own designs
Presentation box for the decorated cupcakes
A personalised Certificate of Excellence for each child signed by Mary.

A refined and elegant evening to include a tapas sit down supper when our psychic, Michelle, will set the scene for the evening with the history of the property followed by a short tour of the rooms at Boreat Manor where paranormal activity has been experienced. This will be followed by a private and personal tarot card reading for each guest. Places are limited to 20 to ensure everyone gets a private reading. The schedule of events for the evening are as follows:

Arrival and welcome - Explanation of the evening ahead with Michelle and Jess

History Walk with Michelle

Dinner - Michelle and Jess will be available to answer questions and explain the evening's activities. You will be split into two groups and will take part in:

Pendulum Energy Tracing - the use of pendulums (gem stone pendulums supplied by us) in certain rooms to investigate the spirit energy that is present.

Scrying - Ancient method where you site in front of a black mirror (provided by us) and focus your intent on getting the answers you seek - many are shown images in the mirror.

Tarot or Tea Leaf readings - You can choose to have either a tarot reading or a tea leaf reading.

Discussion relating to your experience to end the evening.

Boreat Manor is available to hire for photoshoots at very reasonable rates for an hour, a day or longer to suit your requirements. There is the added benefit that if your photoshoot is going to take a few days and you need accommodation Boreat Manor can offer accommodation.

This lovely old traditional Barton Manor Farmhouse retains many of its original features and together with the gardens and grounds provides plenty of inspiration and the old stone walls and wooden outbuildings and more modern stables provide a huge array of interesting backdrops to be used in your photoshoot. Natural water is a beautiful feature of the Devon countryside and we have here at Boreat Manor two spring fed ponds, a small stream and nearer to the house a traditional duck pond complete with a floating duck house. The small copse and larger established trees with a tree swing offers so much of interest to capture on camera. Stunning uninterrupted views of the rolling hills and valleys of the Devonshire Dales surround the property. Devon ditches and typical rustic fencing and hedging define the boundaries. Pick your season to admire how nature defines the texture, colour and mood of the landscape. You may require farm machinery for your photoshoot and we can provide a tractor and a few other farming props.

If you have a requirement for animals we can help you, we have here at Boreat Manor, Dartmoor ponies, a Belguim Warmblood horse, an ex-racehorse, a Great Dane, a Main Coone cat, a boxer dog, lots of chickens, ducks, rabbits and other small animals. We can help with other requirements if necessary.

A few photos to set the scene for our psychic event on 15th October. Although we have had a bit of fun with these photos the photos are of real people who lived at Boreat and have been seen by some. John Issac de Burriate still has a very powerful presence in the Study and we have traced his ancestry through the Issac(k)s DNA group of which we are a member all the way to America. A citrus perfume and the smell of ci**rs is very evident in the house and down in the woods at certain times of the year.

Boreat Manor is available off peak for small family celebrations, children's parties and other small family celebrations as well as craft workshops and other similar events. The farmhouse kitchen is available for cake decorating the kids might enjoy for instance a cup cake decorating party which we can arrange. Lots of ideas coming soon on this page. The emphasis is on small family celebration and we will not be inviting adult parties, hen or stag parties.
