The slightly less glamorous side of flower farming.

It’s that time of year to start sowing seeds.

First step is to clean all the tubs. Then remove the marker from last year. I would normally use nail polish remover but I couldn’t find it, so hit upon the idea of using hand gel! This combined with an old nappy insert worked a treat.

These tubs are the perfect size for my soil blocks. They then go onto a heated mat and at the first sign of germination get transferred into the greenhouse.

That moment when you finally get around to doing the weeding and you realise that your delphiniums grown from seed last year are coming back!!

I was very excited. Mad dash to the shed to get out the sheep’s wool to protect them from slugs and snails.

Also took the time to educate the junior assistant on why we do this. It’s pretty simple really, if you kill the slugs with pellets then you poison them. They then get eaten by birds, toads and hedgehogs. This will then poison them as well!

The sheep’s wool feels a bit scratchy to the slugs and snails so they won’t climb over it. The best thing about it is it’s a natural material and it can go on the compost heap!!

Question 3

I am working through these as snails pace. I blame the January blues!!!

‘How did you get here?’

I tell this story every year, so apologies to those that have heard it before!

‘Twas a night near the end of summer’
Me and my partner sat down to a delicious meal of courgette soup for starter, courgette quiche for main and courgette cake for dessert. We were surrounded by jars of courgette chutney and were looking out the window at a patch of courgette plants.

He turned to me and said ‘Charlotte, please don’t ever grow courgettes again. Why don’t you grow flowers instead.

At the time I liked arranging and did flowers for the church. So I started with dahlias. I interrogated all the members of the local gardening club for hints and tips.

I then developed it a bit more whilst on maternity leave with the junior assistant. I then met a fellow Mum at a baby group who told me about I joined and was inspired to grow more.

I then started doing small weddings, selling bouquets and doing funeral flowers.

So there you go, the moral of the story is grow too many courgettes. You never know where it may lead….

Day 2 of

I always start out well….

A day in your life….

Well at the moment it involves a lot of procrastinating. I seem to spend a lot of time compiling lists of things to do in my head and never quite getting round to doing them….

But on a more positive note, a day in summer where the flowers are in full bloom goes something like this…

I set an early alarm, to either get up before I have to go to work, or take the junior assistant to school and get out into the patch to cut flowers before too much sun gets on them. These are then put in buckets of fresh water and put in the studio/garage.

These will be made into bouquets to either be sent out as gifts or sold in shops or my monthly farmer’s market.

I will then have a quick look round the patch to see what is coming next and make note of all the weeds which I then ignore as when the season is in full swing time for weeding is limited!!

Welcome to day 1 of

I will let you into a little secret, I have never managed to complete this challenge, so maybe 2024 will be my year.

Each day I will attempt to use a prompt to let you know a little bit about me and what I do.

So let’s start with question 1. ‘Who are you?’

Well for those of you that don’t know. My name is Charlotte, I live in East Devon with my partner, 4 year old son and 4 cats. I grow flowers on a small patch in my garden and I also have a part time job analysing bull semen. The photo is a pic of me stood in front of the rather large pile of manure we accumulate at the stud, which often finds it way onto the patch.

Apart from flowers I like wine and cheese, watching terrible/amazing American dramas, being part of my local community and generally being around people.

I don’t like, fruit and meat combinations, (ham and pineapple pizzas should be illegal), bananas and being cold. The last one is sadly often an unwelcome side effect of growing and arranging flowers. I am currently sitting with a hot water bottle over my knees after getting a bit chilly when weeding the beds to finally put my spring bulbs in.
