Wellington House Events brings a “touch of nostalgia “ to the Ayr Show paying homage to the historical connections of the building during WW1.

History of WH in WW1 :
According to local historian Ken Nairn whom had delved into the history of Wellington Squares past, it was discovered that Wellington House provided accommodation to 19 young airmen sent over to train from America during WW1 in 1917-1918.

Many of these young men never made it back home….

A memorial in their honour can be found in Holmston cemetery in Ayr…

A diary kept by one of these young pilots was later published describing their lives in the Royal Flying Corps in Ayrshire.

A copy of this book“ The War Birds “ was discovered on eBay and brought back from America to Wellington House where it now belongs as part of its chequered past.

According to historians the young recruits sent overseas to Europe to learn to fly are now acknowledged & credited to be the “precursor to “the American Airforce….which later officially formed in 1947…
