I wrote this poem after watching the repatriation of soldiers who had died fighting in Afghanistan. I was shocked and honoured when it won the UK National Poetry Award and it’s been a privilege to recite it over the years at Remembrance services around the country. This year is very different, and buying a poppy to remember those who died for us and support the Royal British Legion in the amazing work that they do is much harder, but not impossible.
